This study provides an in-depth analysis of transnational migration and cultural adaptation through the oral life history of Mr. A, a male ethnic Korean from China. The purpose of the study is to shed light on the process of long-term settlement and sustained employment beyond simple labor migration and to explore the aspects of cultural adaptation and identity formation that emerge from the complex experiences of transnational migration. The research employed an oral life history approach and thematic analysis to examine Mr. A’s life experiences, identifying key themes such as economic stability, overcoming cultural discrimination, and the formation of family networks. The findings reveal that Mr. A overcame initial economic hardships and cultural discrimination, established his identity through support from local community networks and family ties, and achieved the accomplishments of long-term settlement and contributions to the local community. Notably, the intergenerational migration experiences of his grandparents and parents, along with his self-reliance, served as critical foundations for his adaptation and settlement process. This study highlights the importance of an individual’s proactive attitude, a stable work environment, and family networks in the settlement and integration of transnational migrants. Future research will focus on comparing and analyzing migration experiences across diverse backgrounds and family units to identify generalized patterns of migration and adaptation and to propose policy implications.

본 연구는 중국동포 남성 A씨의 구술 생애사를 통해 초국적 이주와 문화 적응 과정 을 심층적으로 분석하였다. 연구의 목적은 A씨의 사례를 통해 단순한 노동 이주를 넘 어선 장기적 정착과 지속적인 직장생활의 과정을 조명하고, 초국적 이주의 복합적 경 험에서 나타나는 문화 적응과 정체성 형성의 양상을 밝히는 데 있다. 연구 방법으로는 구술 생애사적 접근과 주제 분석을 활용하여 A씨의 생애를 분석하였으며, 이를 통해 경제적 안정, 문화적 차별 극복, 가족 네트워크 형성 등 주요 주제를 도출하였다. 연구 결과, A씨는 초기의 경제적 어려움과 문화적 차별을 극복하고 지역사회의 지원망과 가 족 네트워크를 통해 정체성을 확립하였으며, 장기적 정착과 지역사회 기여라는 성취를 이루었다. 특히 조부모와 부모 세대의 연속적 이주 경험과 자립심이 구술자의 적응과 정착 과정에 중요한 기반이 되었다. 본 연구는 초국적 이주자의 정착과 통합 과정에서 개인의 능동적 태도와 안정적 직장생활, 초국적 가족 네트워크의 중요성을 강조한다. 후속 연구에서는 다양한 배경과 가족 단위의 이주 경험을 비교·분석하여 이주와 적응 의 일반화된 패턴을 도출하고 정책적 지원 방안을 제시하고자 한다.
