This study analyzed the images that often appear in the early poems of Cheon Sang-byung. Cheon Sang-byung’s poetry revolves around images of the sky, birds, water, and roads, revealing the poet’s world perception and poetry consciousness. The image of the sky appears as an ideal space in contrast to earthly life, and symbolizes the poet’s direction. The bird is connected to the hardships of reality, the three of free flight, ontological tension, and brightness In addition, water reveals a sense of futility with death in mind and expresses that humans are fundamentally finite. The road is a space for concrete actions about the grassland world, and has the meaning of departure, arrival, and exploration. The world perception revealed in the early poems of Cheon Sangbyung is mainly based on the tragedy of life, which is expressed in emotions such as longing, sadness, and sadness. In particular, this tragedy intensifies when confronted with the concrete reality of poverty and alienation. In this reality, the poetic self escapes to the inner space or misses the original hometown. However, this consciousness of root regression has a positive meaning in that it leads to a purified perception of life, not just escape. In conclusion, the image that appeared in Cheon Sang-byung’s early poetry reflects the poet’s spiritual orientation to transcend it while recognizing the tragedy of reality.

본 연구는 천상병의 초기 시에 자주 나타나 있는 이미지에 대하여 분석하였다. 천상병의 시는 하늘과 새, 그리고 물과 길의 이미지를 중심으로 전개되며, 이를 통해 시인의 세계인식과 시 의식을 드러낸다. 하늘의 심 상은 지상적 삶과 대비되는 이상적 공간으로 나타나며, 시인의 지향점을 상징한다. 새는 현실의 고난과 연결되어 자유로운 비상, 존재론적 긴장, 밝음의 세계 지향 등 다양한 의미를 내포한다. 또, 물은 죽음을 염두에 둔 허무 의식을 드러내고 인간은 근원적으로 유한한 존재라는 것을 표현한다. 길은 초원적 세계에 대한 구체적 행위의 공간으로 출발과 도착, 그리고 탐색의 의미를 지닌다. 천상병의 초기 시에 드러나는 세계인식은 주로 삶의 비극성에 기반하 며, 이는 그리움, 비애, 슬픔 등의 정서로 표현된다. 특히 가난과 소외라는 구체적 현실과 맞닥뜨릴 때 이러한 비극성이 심화된다. 시적 자아는 이러 한 현실에서 내면 공간으로 도피하거나, 근원적 고향을 그리워 하는 모습 을 보인다. 그러나 이러한 근원 회귀의 의식은 단순한 도피가 아닌, 삶에 대한 정화된 인식으로 이어진다는 점에서 긍정적 의미를 지닌다. 결론적 으로 천상병의 초기 시에 나타난 이미지는 현실의 비극성을 인식하면서 도, 이를 초월하고자 하는 시인의 정신적 지향을 반영하고 있다.
