This study examines the film as a text that reflects contemporary societal dynamics through the lens of apartment living. In modern Korean society, apartments symbolize a multifaceted social issue that extends far beyond their functional role as residential spaces. Following an unexplained disaster that reduces the world to ashes, leaving only the 103 Palace Apartments standing, the intricacies of human desires and the conflicts surrounding apartments become sharply pronounced. The narrative of shifts its focus away from the disaster itself to explore human behaviors and choices in its aftermath. The apartment residents, in their struggle for survival, expel outsiders, effectively relegating them to exile. This dynamic exemplifies “survivalism,” a key ideology of the neoliberal era that legitimizes ostracism and exclusion. Within the apartments, the remaining residents establish self-governing communities driven by an “identitarian obsession.” However, these communities are sustained through hostility and aggression directed at the external world, perpetuating a cycle of exploitation and exclusion. In the contemporary era, democracy, instead of being a system that serves the majority, has often been appropriated by an oligarchic minority. It has devolved into a facade that rationalizes discrimination and violence. Democratic communities subjected to such oligarchic rule face inevitable collapse as internal contradictions intensify. In Concrete Utopia, the division between insiders and outsiders within the apartment complex ultimately turns inward, culminating in catastrophe.

본 연구는 영화 <콘크리트 유토피아>를 아파트를 매개로 현시대의 징후를 드러내는 텍스트로 바라본다. 한국 사회에서 아파트는 단순한 주거 공간이 아닌 복잡하고 첨예한 판도라의 상자다. 원인을 알 수 없는 재난 이 발생하여 황궁아파트 103동만 남기고 세계가 잿더미가 되면서, 아파 트를 둘러싼 욕망과 갈등의 충돌이 첨예화된다. <콘크리트 유토피아>는 재난 자체보다 재난 이후 사람들의 선택과 행 동에 주목한다. 아파트 주민들은 살아남아야 한다는 이유로 외부인을 추 방하여 사지로 내몬다. 신자유주의 시대의 주요한 이데올로기로 등극한 ‘생존주의’는 타자에 대한 배척과 배제를 정당화한다. 남은 주민들은 나 름의 자치를 시작하며 공동체를 형성한다. 주민 공동체의 결속은 ‘정체성에 대한 강박’으로 구성되었기에 외부를 향한 반복적인 혐오와 적대로만 유지될 수 있다. 애초에 외부를 배제한 내부란 존재 불가능하며, 내부 세계의 풍요로움은 외부 세계에 대한 반복 적인 착취와 약탈을 통해 지속된다. 오늘날 민주주의란 모두의 세계가 아닌 일부의 과두정일 뿐이며 차별 과 폭력을 정당화하는 허울이 되었다. ‘민주주의’를 표방하지만, 일방적 인 과두정으로 통치되어 온 주민 공동체는 내부 모순의 심화로 무너지기 시작한다. 결국 아파트 내부와 외부로 쪼개진 세계는 서로에 대한 증오를 표출하고 전투를 벌이며 파국으로 치닫고 만다.
