This study examines the Tarot Garden, created by 20th-century sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) in Capalbio, Italy, featuring sculptures of the major arcana of tarot cards, through the lens of heterotopia as conceptualized by French philosopher Michel Foucault. Heterotopia refers to ‘a place that actually exists in reality but is fundamentally distinct from everyday reality.’ The Tarot Garden can be seen as an embodiment of Foucault’s concept of heterotopia, as it is a physical space that exists in reality while simultaneously being distinct from everyday reality. This study applies Foucault’s six principles of heterotopia to the specific case of the Tarot Garden and, conversely, distills the unique characteristics and significance of the Tarot Garden into six key aspects : Firstly, the Tarot Garden provides visitors with a journey of reflection on life through sculptures that intertwine mythology, legends, and the artist’s personal imagination ; Secondly, the Tarot Garden inspires emotional healing and self-reconstruction through its fantastical sculptures, featuring smooth curves, asymmetrical shapes, and vibrant primary colors ; Thirdly, the Tarot Garden presents a social message of resistance against discrimination and prejudice, offering visitors a perspective for shifting social awareness ; Fourthly, the Tarot Garden becomes a querencia where visitors can actively and dynamically experience art appreciation, play, and reflection, allowing them to recharge ; Fifthly, the Tarot Garden, as a community revitalization project created in collaboration with local artists, fosters local pride and contributes to the reconstruction of regional culture ; Sixthly, the Tarot Garden serves as a model of sustainable, eco-friendly art creation that seeks harmony with nature and the environment. Through the six perspectives derived from Niki de Saint Phalle’s Tarot Garden as a concrete example of heterotopia, this study aims to offer a new viewpoint on Foucault’s concept of heterotopia and expand its boundaries.

본 연구에서는 20세기 조형예술가 니키 드 생팔(1930-2002)이 이탈리아 카팔비오에 타로카드의 주요 아르카나들을 조형물로 만들어 조성한 타로공원을 프랑스 철학자 미셸 푸코가 체계화한 헤테로토피아에 적용해서 살펴보았다. 헤테로토피아는 현실에서 실제로 존재하는 장소이면서 현실과는 이질적인 장소를 의미한다. 타로공원은 실제 현실에 존재 하는 공간이면서 동시에 현실과 차별화된 공간이라는 점에서 푸코의 헤테로토피아의 한 구현으로 볼 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 푸코가 제시한 헤테로토피아의 여섯 가지 원리에 타로공원의 구체적 사례를 적용해보고, 역으로 타로공원의 고유한 성격과 가치를 다음의 여섯 가지로 정리하였다. 첫째, 타로공원은 신화와 전설, 작가 개인의 상상의 조각들로 관람객에게 삶에 대한 성찰의 여정을 제공한다. 둘째, 타로공원은 부드러운 곡선과 비대칭적 형상, 다양한 원색의 환상적인 조형물로 관객들에게 감성적 치유와 자아 재건의 영감을 준다. 셋째, 타로공원은 차별과 편견에 저항하는 사회적 메시지로 관람객들에 사회적 인식 전환을 제시한다. 넷째, 타로공원은 관객들이 예술 감상, 놀이, 성찰을 주체적, 역동적으로 체험하며 재충전하는 케렌시아가 된다. 다섯째, 타로공원은 지역 예술인들과 함께 일군 지역 재생 공공 프로젝트로 지역인들의 자부심 고취와 지역문화 재건을 가져온다. 여섯째, 타로공원은 자연과 환경의 조화를 추구하는 지속 가능한 생태 친화적 예술 창작의 한 모범을 제시한다. 생팔의 타로공원의 헤테로토피아의 구체적 한 실천 사례에서 도출한 여섯 관점의 가치를 통해 우리는 푸코가 제안한 헤테로토피아에 새로운 관점을 제시하고 그 경계를 확장하고자 하였다.
