The Humanities City Project, launched by the National Research Foundation of Korea as part of its Humanities Popularization Project, is now in its 11th year. The Humanities City Project aims to explore humanities assets of the region and thereby implement the value of the humanities to be shared and spread throughout society. This paper intends to examine the significance and challenges of regional humanities on the basis of the Humanities City Project conducted by Sookmyung Research Institute of Humanities from 2017 to 2020 and the Regional Humanities Project within the Humanities-Korea-Plus Project, which is currently in its fifth year after being selected in 2020. The term “Humanities in Action,” which reflects the question of what the humanities can actually do for the world, encompasses the attempts of humanities to engage with society outside the university, or more specifically, with people in the region and beyond. First, this paper will introduce the ‘Humanities City Yongsan’ Project carried out by Sookmyung Research Institute of Humanities and the Regional Humanities Project that the Center for Empathetic Humanities has been conducting under the Sookmyung Humanities-Korea-Plus Project of ‘The Age of Disgust and Hate: How the Humanities Respond to.’ Then, it will consider what efforts and improvements are needed to make Humanities City Projects more sustainable for the next ten or twenty years.

한국연구재단의 인문학 대중화사업의 일환으로 시작된 인문도시지원사업이 올해로 11 년째를 맞았다. 인문도시지원사업은 지역의 인문자산의 발굴과 활용을 토대로 인문학의 가치가 사회 전반에 걸쳐 공유, 확산될 수 있도록 하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 이 논문은 숙명여자대학교 인문학연구소가 2017년부터 3년 동안 수행한 <터-무-니 속의 더불어 삶, 인문도시 용산> 사업과 <혐오시대, 인문학의 대응>을 목표로 2020년부터 운영하고 있는 인문한국플러스지원사업단의 지역인문학사업의 경험을 바탕으로 지역인문학의 지 속 가능성과 앞으로의 과제를 살펴보고자 한다. 인문학이 세상을 위해 무엇을 할 수 있을 까 하는 고민에서 비롯된 “실천하는 인문학”은 대학 밖의 사회, 좀 더 구체적으로는, 대학이 속한 지역 및 그 너머의 사람들과 소통하려는 인문학의 시도를 포괄적으로 함축한다. 인문도시지원사업으로 대표되는 지역인문학사업은 그러한 실천하는 인문학의 정신을 반 영한다. 이 논문에서는 먼저 숙명여자대학교 인문학연구소가 수행한 인문도시지원사업과 인문한국플러스지원사업단에서 지역인문학 업무를 전담하고 있는 공감인문학센터의 사 례를 차례대로 소개한 뒤에 인문도시지원사업 중심의 지역인문학이 지속적으로 가능하기 위해서는 어떠한 구체적인 노력과 개선이 필요한지 생각해보고자 한다. 이러한 제언이 어느 때보다 심각한 위기에 놓인 인문학의 진흥에 작게나마 도움이 되었으면 한다.
