Older adults tend to be reluctant to seek professional help even if they have mental health problems. Therefore, this study examined the help-seeking attitudes of older adults regarding the use of mental health services, and also aimed to confirm the effects of mental health literacy and social support on the attitudes and the mediating effect of the literacy. The study participants were 300 older adults aged between 65 and 83 years, all of them were members of an online research panel company. They were measured for levels of the mental health literacy, help-seeking attitudes, and social support, and the primary methods of data analysis were structural equation modeling and mediation effect analysis. The major findings were that the social support influenced the mental health literacy but not the help-seeking attitudes. The mental health literacy was found to mediate the relationship between social support and help-seeking attitudes. The findings imply that older adults need a high level of mental health literacy in order to actively seek professional help when experiencing mental health problems, and that social support would play an important role in enhancing the level of literacy. Based on the findings, the study discusses the need for encouraging older adults to interact with acquaintances who have a high level of mental health literacy as well as the need for literacy enhancement programs targeting caregivers or family members who can serve as social supporters for the adults, to facilitate the utilization of mental health services.

고령자들은 정신건강 문제를 지니더라도 전문적인 도움 추구에 소극적인 편이다. 이에 본 연구에서 는 고령자의 정신건강 서비스 이용에 관한 전문적 도움 추구 태도를 살폈으며, 또 정신건강 문해력 과 사회적 지지가 그 태도에 미치는 영향 및 문해력의 매개효과를 확인하고자 했다. 연구 대상자는 65세에서 83세 사이의 고령자 300명이었는데, 그들은 모두 온라인 연구 패널 전문 회사의 회원들이 었다. 그들을 대상으로 정신건강 문해력을 비롯하여 전문적 도움 추구 태도, 사회적 지지 수준을 측 정했으며, 자료 분석의 주요한 방법은 구조 모형의 검증과 매개효과 분석이었다. 자료 분석 결과, 사 회적 지지는 정신건강 문해력에는 영향을 미쳤지만, 전문적 도움 추구 태도는 그렇지 않았다. 정신건 강 문해력은 사회적 지지와 전문적 도움 추구 태도의 관계에서 매개 역할을 하는 것으로 확인되었 다. 이와 같은 결과는 고령자가 정신건강 문제를 경험할 때 적극적으로 전문적인 도움 추구 행동을 하기 위해서는 정신건강 문해력 수준이 높아야 함을 의미하며, 그 문해력 수준을 높이기 위해서는 사회적 지지의 역할이 중요함을 시사한다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 고령자의 정신건강 서비스 이용을 촉진하기 위해 정신건강 문해력이 높은 지인과의 상호작용 장려를 비롯하여 고령자에게 사회적 지지 자가 될 수 있는 보호자나 가족 대상의 문해력 증진 프로그램 필요성에 대해 논했다.
