This review examines Seo Jang-weon’s book, Totentanz and Vado Mori: Searching for the Archetype of the Dance of Death in the Late Middle Ages. The author analyzes the cultural representations and perceptions of death in late medieval European society, focusing on the unique artistic form of “Totentanz.” The worldview of medieval people, shaped by devastating calamities such as the Black Death and the Great Famine, found expression through murals, literature, and theological discourses, eventually evolving into church-planned art. This review explores how Totentanz blurred the boundaries between life and death, transforming the values and norms of medieval society. It also discusses key concepts presented in the book, such as the "Parousia of Death," "Contemptus Mundi," and "Medias in Res," which serve as essential frameworks for understanding Totentanz. By shedding light on the cultural significance of Totentanz, which continues to influence modern art and culture beyond the medieval era, this study offers profound insights into medieval art and society.

이 서평은 서장원의 저서 토텐탄츠와 바도모리: 중세 말 죽음의 춤 원형을 찾아서를 다 루고 있다. 저자는 중세 예술의 독특한 형식인 ‘토텐탄츠(Totentanz)’를 중심으로 중세 말 유럽 사회의 죽음에 대한 인식과 그 문화적 표현 방식을 분석한다. 흑사병과 대기근 등 극심한 재난 속에서 형성된 중세인의 죽음관은 벽화와 문학, 신학적 논의를 통해 표현되었 으며, 이는 교회의 기획 예술로 발전했다. 본 서평은 토텐탄츠가 어떻게 인간의 삶과 죽음 의 경계를 허물며 중세 사회의 가치관과 규범을 변화시켰는지 살펴본다. 또한, 저서에서 제시된 주요 개념인 ‘죽음의 파루시아’, ‘콘템프투스 문디’, ‘메디아스 인 레스’가 토텐탄츠 를 이해하는 핵심 열쇠임을 논의한다. 이 연구는 중세를 넘어 현대 예술과 문화에까지 지 속적으로 영향을 미치고 있는 토텐탄츠의 문화적 의미를 조명하며, 독자들에게 중세 예술 과 사회에 대한 깊은 통찰을 제공한다.
