Han stone carvings originated in the late Western Han period, reached their peak during the mid Eastern Han period, and gradually declined by the end of the Eastern Han. The content of Han stone carvings is extensive, encompassing various aspects of social life. Among these, the "Kitchen Scenes" (庖廚圖) represent a distinctive form, primarily depicting activities such as cooking, slaughtering, chopping vegetables, and fetching water. These scenes vividly recreate the culinary practices of the Han Dynasty, reflecting the economic prosperity, cultural exchanges, and ideological concepts prevalent in Han society. The "Kitchen Scenes" creatively transform everyday life scenarios through artistic processing to align with the aesthetic standards of the Han period. Their form and composition embody an artistic style that integrates practicality with ornamentation, demonstrating a harmonious blend of functional and decorative elements. This paper aims to explore the visual narrative of the "Kitchen Scenes" by conducting an in-depth analysis of key elements such as graphic language, schematic structures, and stylistic features, and examining how these factors influence the effectiveness of visual storytelling in these carvings. Starting from the historical background and cultural significance of the "Kitchen Scenes," this study employs archaeological imagery as the foundational research material. It integrates multidisciplinary approaches and theories, including semiotics, iconography, and folklore studies, to analyze the cultural phenomena depicted in the "Kitchen Scenes" and to investigate the social factors contributing to their emergence and decline. The research reveals that the "Kitchen Scenes" in Han stone carvings not only reflect the rise of dietary culture and elaborate burial customs of the time but also illustrate the artistic schematic concepts and the unique aesthetic values inherent in Han paintings through graphic storytelling. The decline of the "Kitchen Scenes" was ultimately influenced by several factors, including socioeconomic changes, shifts in beliefs about life and death, the impact of foreign cultures, and the evolution of artistic practices themselves. The rise and fall of the "Kitchen Scenes" embody the diverse and inclusive life values of traditional Chinese culture, underscoring their significant artistic and historical value.

한(漢)화상은 서한 말기에 기원하여 동한 중기에 전성기를 맞았으며, 동한 말기 에 이르러 점차 쇠퇴의 길을 걸었다. 한화상석은 내용이 매우 풍부하여 사회생활의 각 측면을 포괄한다. 이 중 ‘주방도(庖廚圖)’는 독특한 형식으로, 주로 요리, 도살, 채소 손질, 물 긷기 등의 장면을 담고 있어 한대(漢代)의 조리 활동을 생동감 있게 재현하 며, 당시 사회의 경제적 번영, 문화 교류, 사상적 관념을 반영한다. ‘주방도’는 일상생 활 장면을 예술적으로 가공하여 한대의 미적 기준에 부합하게 표현하였으며, 그 조형 과 구도는 실용성과 장식성이 결합된 예술적 양식을 보여준다. 본 연구는 한화상석 ‘주 방도’의 이미지 시각적 서사를 탐구하고, ‘주방도’에 나타난 도상 언어, 도식, 스타일 등 주요 요소가 시각적 서사 효과에 미치는 영향을 심층적으로 분석하고자 한다. 이를 위 해 ‘주방도’의 역사적 배경과 문화적 가치를 바탕으로 고고학적 도상을 연구 자료로 삼 고, 기호학, 도상학, 민속학 등 다학문적 방법과 이론을 결합하여 ‘주방도’에 내재된 문 화적 현상 및 그 생성과 쇠퇴의 사회적 원인을 고찰한다. 연구 결과, 한화상석 ‘주방도’ 는 단순히 당시 음식 문화의 발전과 후장(厚葬) 풍습을 반영하는 데 그치지 않고, 도상 적 서사를 통해 한대 예술의 도식적 관념과 한화(漢畫) 특유의 미적 가치를 드러낸다. 그러나 사회경제적 변화, 생사 신앙의 전환, 외래 문화의 유입, 예술 자체의 발전 등의 다양한 요인으로 인해 점차 쇠퇴하였다. 한화상석 ‘주방도’의 흥망성쇠는 중국 전통 문 화의 다원적 포용성을 반영한 생명관을 구현하며, 중요한 예술적 가치와 역사적 가치 를 지니고 있다.
