The purpose of this text is to examine the presence and characteristics of modern witticisms included in witticism collections during the Japanese colonial period, and to clarify their nature. While research on witticism collections from the Japanese colonial period has reached a certain level, it is considered somewhat inadequate to categorize the nature of each witticisms consistently by focusing solely on the witticism ‘collections’. In this text, witticisms with a modern character, distinct from traditional witticisms before modern times, included in collections from the Japanese colonial period are defined as “modern witticisms.” The text aims to identify the distinctive characteristics of these witticisms. Firstly, the study examines the presence of modern witticisms in witticism collections from the Japanese colonial period. Instead of categorizing them based on chronological periods, the analysis is conducted based on the “audience of the witticism collections” and the“nature of the included witticisms.” As a result, a classification is made into intellectual class-enjoyed witticism collections and popular classenjoyed witticism collections, and further subcategories are created into traditional witticism-focused collections and modern witticism-focused collections. Next, the text explores the characteristics of modern witticisms included in witticism collections from the Japanese colonial period. Firstly, it identifies the Enlightenment discourse in witticisms that adopt the editorial format and the parable format. Particularly, witticisms adopting the editorial format are divided into “editorial witticisms” and“narrative editorial witticisms,” where the former simply adopts the editorial format of newspapers while the latter combines the editorial (first part) with narrative witticisms (second part), effectively conveying the aesthetic qualities of witticisms through the latter part. The use of fables for Enlightenment is characterized by an indirect nature. witticisms in the traditional witticisms-focused witticism collections with a parable format mainly revolve around animal fables, while those in modern witticisms-focused witticism collections anthropomorphize various objects. Additionally, editorial comments are added at the end of witticisms to clearly convey moral and enlightening messages. Secondly, another aspect of modern witticisms is presented through parodying various modern writing forms and depicting the inadequacies in adapting to new culture. These witticisms reflect societal aspects through parodying diverse modern writing forms such as academic papers, advertisements, legal documents, official documents, and textbooks. The focus is not on the themes or narrative structures of witticisms, as seen in the previously discussed witticisms, but on the“form” itself as a crucial device in witticisms. This style of witticisms is considered useful for “showing aspects of social phenomena.” Although newspapers and magazines introduced many new culture during the modern era, they remained unfamiliar to those who could not easily access mass media. Modern witticisms capture the moments of adaptation difficulties experienced by individuals when encountering new culture in a humorous manner. witticisms related to maladaptation to new culture, such as misunderstandings and exaggerated scenes (dialogues or actions), are presented in a straightforward structure. These witticisms, focusing on aspects of social phenomena and avoiding lengthy narratives, bear similarity to modern humor.

이 글의 목적은 일제강점기 재담집을 대상으로 수록된 근대재담의 존재 양상을 살피고 그 성격을 규명하는 데 있다. 일제강점기 재담집에 관한 연 구는 일정 정도 수준에 도달했다고 할 수 있겠지만, 재담‘집’에만 집중한 결과 각각의 재담을 일관된 틀로 묶어 그 성격을 규명하는 데는 다소 미흡 했다고 생각한다. 이 글에서는 일제강점기 재담집에 수록된 재담 중 근대 이전의 전통재담과 확연한 차이를 보이는 근대적 성격을 띠는 재담을 ‘근대재담’으로 규정하여, 그 재담들만의 변별적인 성격을 규명했다. 우선, 일제강점기 재담집 소재 근대재담의 존재 양상을 살펴보았다. 재담집의 존재 양상에 관한 시대별 고찰은 여러 문제점을 안고 있는바, 일제강점기 재담집의 존재 양상을 시대별이 아닌 ‘재담집 향유층’과 ‘수 록된 재담의 성격’을 기준으로 삼았다. 그 결과 지식인층 향유 재담집 과 대중 향유 재담집으로 대별한 후, 이를 다시 전통재담 위주의 재담 집과 근대재담 위주의 재담집으로 각각 하위 분류할 수 있었다. 다음으로, 일제강점기 재담집 소재 근대재담의 성격을 고찰했다. 첫째, 논설 형식과 우화 형식을 차용한 재담에서 계몽담론의 성격을 확인할 수 있다. 특히 신문의 논설을 차용한 재담은 ‘논설재담’과 ‘서사적 논설 재담’으로 나눠볼 수 있는데, 전자는 단순히 신문의 논설 형식을 차용한 재담이고, 후자는 서사성을 띠면서 편집자의 논평이 드러나는 재담이 다. 논설재담은 신문의 논설 형식을 그대로 가져오면서 재담의 미적 특 질인 ‘재치와 재미, 웃음’을 전달하는 방식이고, 서서적 논설재담은 ‘논 설(전반부)+서사적 재담(후반부)’의 구조를 이루면서, 후반부를 통해 재 담의 미적 특질을 효과적으로 구현하는 방식이다. 우화를 통한 계몽은 간접적인 계몽의 성격을 띠는데, 전통재담 위주 의 재담집에 수록된 우화 형식의 재담은 모두 동물우화이면서 전래된 재담이 주축을 이루지만, 근대재담 위주의 재담집에 수록된 우화 형식 의 재담은 다양한 사물을 의인화하고 있으며, 재담 말미에 편집자적 논 평을 추가하여 교훈적이고 계몽적인 메시지를 더욱 분명하게 전달하고 있다는 점에서 차이를 보인다. 둘째, 근대재담의 또 다른 양상으로 다양한 근대 글쓰기 양식의 패러 디와 신문물에 대한 부적응을 통해 사회 현장의 단면을 드러낸다는 것 이다. 논문, 광고, 법조문, 공문서, 교과서 등 다양한 근대 글쓰기 양식 의 패러디를 통해 세태를 반영하고 있다. 특히 앞서 살펴본 재담처럼 논설의 주제나 서사구조, 편집자의 논평 등이 중요한 것이 아니라, ‘양식’ 그 자체가 중요한 재담의 장치로 작동하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 나열의 방식을 통해 이러한 성격의 재담은 당대의 다양한 사회 현상이나 인간 군상들의 모습을 여실히 보여주고 있다는 측면에서 ‘사회 현상의 단면 보여주기’에 유용한 글쓰기 방식이라 할 수 있다. 근대에는 신문과 잡지를 통해 신문물이 많이 소개되었지만, 대중매체 를 쉽게 접할 수 없는 사람들에게는 여전히 생소하기만 했다. 근대재담 중에는 이들이 신문물을 접하게 되었을 때 겪게 되는 부적응의 단면들 을 재치 있게 담아내고 있다. 전차, 영화, 우체통, 선풍기 등의 신문물에 대한 부적응을 다룬 재담은 대부분 단순한 구조로 되어 있다. 해당 인 물들이 신문물을 접한 후 자기만의 방식으로 오해한 상황을 순간 포착 해서 그 장면(대화 혹은 행동)을 극대화해 보여주는 방식을 취하고 있 다. 특히 이러한 재담은 장황한 서사나 서술을 지양하면서 사회 현상의 단면에 초점을 맞춰 제시하고 있다는 점에서 현대의 유머와 유사하다.
