Since the 2010s, rappers from slums or Korean-Japanese rappers have been prominent in the Japanese underground hip-hop scene. Those who were wandering as delinquent boy or tramp in poverty and discrimination spread their experiences through rap, drawing support and empathy from many people, which has a great influence on youth culture as a whole. Today, hip-hop is popularized and commercialized as a global cultural trend, but originally, hip-hop culture was pioneered by Afro-Americans, a discriminated group, and emerged as a counterculture against white-centered society. Japanese underground rappers have inherited this counter cultural identity and have secured their own areas of activity that are distinct from the mainstream music market. The idea that ‘real’ hip-hop, which has legitimacy and originality, is an objection to established society and accuses the reality of minorities, outsiders, and discrimination groups has been inherited by young people living in the periphery of Japan. Therefore, in this article, I would like to pay attention to the phenomenon in which hip-hop’s counter-cultural or minority identity is being inherited and reconstructed in the periphery of Japanese society and discuss its cultural and historical significance. In particular, we will examine the significance of the cultural practice of underground rappers who express themselves as minorities by appropriating the style of subculture.

2010년대 이래 일본 언더그라운드 힙합에서는 한때 ‘부락’으로 불리던 슬럼가 출신 래퍼, 혹은 재일코리안 래퍼들의 활약이 두드러지고 있다. 빈곤과 차별 속에서 비행소년이나 부랑아로 방황하던 이들이 자신의 경험을 랩으로 전파하여 많은 사람의 지지와 공감을 끌어냄으로써, 청년문화 전반에 큰 영향을 미치고 있다. 오늘날 힙합은 세계적인 문화트렌드로 확산되어 대중화, 상업화를 거듭하고 있지만, 본래 힙합문화는 미국의 피차별 집단인 아프로 아메리칸들에 의해 개척된 것으로, 백인중심사회에 반하는 대항문화(카운터컬처)로 출현했다. 일본의 언더그라운드 래퍼들은 이러한 대항문화적 정체성을 계승함으로써, 주류 음악 시장과 구별되는 독자적인 활동 영역을 확보하고 있다. 마이너리티, 아웃사이더, 피차별 집단 등의 현실을 가시화하여 기성 사회에 대한 이의 제기를 실천하는 것이야말로, 정통성과 독창성을 지닌 ‘리얼’ 힙합이라는 인식이 새로이 공유되고 있는 것이다. 따라서 이 글에서는 힙합의 ‘대항문화적’ 혹은 ‘변경적(비주류파)’ 정체성이 일본 사회 주변부에서 계승 및 재구성되고 있는 현상에 주목하고 그것의 문화사적 의의를 논하고자 한다. 특히 미국발 서브컬처의 스타일을 자기 표현의 양식으로 전유한 언더그라운드 래퍼들의 문화적 실천이 마이너리티의 자기서사로서 지니는 의미를 살펴보기로 한다.
