The pulsating heart of traditional Korean narrative singing, pansori, has echoed through the valleys of its homeland and resonated across the Pacific, finding a unique reception in the U.S. Since the first pansori performance was introduced in the U.S. in 1964, it has steadily grown over 60 years—gaining popularity as a form of artistic and cultural expression, representing one of Korea’s quintessential musical traditions. This paper examines the evolution of pansori in a chronological framework, divided into five overlapping phases during the last six decades. Each phase represents a consequential step in the process, with every new phase building upon the achievements and developments of the preceding one, highlighting the interdependent nature of this cultural progression. In addition, each phase is intricately aligned with the evolving political, socio-cultural, and economic contexts of the Korean homeland. The timeline extends from the post-war reconstruction of the 1950s, a period deeply influenced by Cold War ideologies, through the 1960s with the subsequent system of cultural heritage established by the government, continuing through the economic boom that shaped the modern national identity, and finally arriving at the contemporary era characterized by globalization.

전통 한국 서사 음악인 판소리의 맥박은 고국의 계곡을 울렸고, 그 맥락은 태평양 을 넘어 미국에서도 주목할 만한 반향을 일으켰다. 1964년 미국에 첫 판소리 공연이 소개된 이후, 판소리는 60년 동안 꾸준히 성장하여 한국의 대표적인 음악 전통 중 하나로서 예술적, 문화적 표현의 한 형태로 인기를 얻었다. 본 논문은 지난 60년 동 안의 판소리 발전을 통시적 틀로 검토하며, 이를 다섯 개의 중첩된 단계로 나누어 분석한다. 각 단계는 판소리 발전 과정에서 중요한 한 걸음을 나타내며, 새로운 단 계는 이전 단계의 성과와 발전에 기반을 두어 상호 의존적 진보를 이루어냄을 강조 한다. 또한 각 단계는 한국의 정치적, 사회문화적, 경제적 맥락의 변화와 긴밀하게 연결된다. 이 연대기는 냉전 이데올로기의 영향을 깊이 받은 1950년대 전의 복구 시기부터 시작해, 1960년대 정부에 의해 수립된 문화유산 체계를 거쳐, 현대 국가 정체성을 형성한 경제 호황기를 지나, 세계화로 특징지어지는 현대에 이르기까지 확장된다.
