This paper examines the representations of ‘Hyeop(俠)’ in Korean classical poetry by dividing them into two categories: descriptions of ancient Hyeop through imagination and depictions of Hyeop that existed in reality. The findings are summarized as follows. Descriptions of ancient Hyeop through imagination include works that reconstruct and critique the deeds of historical figures such as ‘Jing Ke(荊軻)’ and ‘Zhu Hai(朱亥)’. There are also works that borrow titles from Han(漢), Wei(魏), and Tang(唐) era Yuefu(樂府) and gushi(古詩), creating fictional characters or protagonists with ambiguous personalities. These characters are often portrayed with fictionalized appearances, exploits, and surrounding atmospheres. Many of these works do not explicitly reveal the author's creative intentions, leaving room for diverse interpretations by readers. Occasionally, the author’s dissatisfaction with reality is reflected in a longing and imaginative depiction of the heroic exploits of these figures. In contrast, some works focus on real individuals from the author’s time, giving them the t itle o f ‘Hyeop’ and describing their a ctions i n poetry. These inclu de heroic figures who selflessly help those in need, people who succeed or fail in moving away from a chivalrous life, female warriors with great martial skills, and kisaeng heroines. Such representations go beyond limiting chivalry to Korean men and become more diverse, especially in the late Joseon dynasty. These works are often based on the author’s personal experiences, showing the appearance and deeds of these heroes in a realistic and detailed way. They also reflect the social and political atmosphere of the time, with the author’s intentions becoming clearer. As described above, the fact that ‘Hyeop’ has been established as a recurring theme in Korean classical poetry and has been consistently featured in creative works indicates that q u ite a few people acknowledged certain actions or values of ‘Hyeop’ to some extent, despite ‘Hyeop’ being a f igu re who v iolated laws or deviated from the righteous path.

본고는 한국 한시에 나타난 ‘俠’의 형상화 양상을 옛 협을 상상하여 형상화한 경우와 현실에 실재하는 협을 형상화한 경우로 구분하여 살핀 것이다. 옛 협을 상상하여 형상화한 작품은 荊軻, 朱亥 등 역사적 인물의 행적을 재구하고 논 평한 경우가 있었으며, 漢․ 魏, 唐代 樂府와 古詩의 제목을 차용하고 가공의 인물이나 모호한 성격의 주인공을 설정하여, 이들의 외모, 활약, 주변 분위기 등을 허구적으로 묘 사한 경우가 있었다. 작가의 창작 의도가 문면에 뚜렷이 드러나지 않아 독자에게 다양하 게 해석될 여지를 남긴 작품이 많은 가운데 때로는 현실에 대한 작가의 불만이 협에 대 한 동경과 상상으로 드러난 경우도 있었다. 작가와 동시대를 살았던 실존 인물에게 ‘협’이라는 명칭을 부여하고 이들의 활약상을 시로 표현한 작품은 곤란함에 처한 사람을 조건 없이 돕는 협, 협의 삶으로부터 태세 전환에 성공했거나 실패한 협, 뛰어난 무예 솜씨를 지닌 여협, 기생 여협 등을 들 수 있으며, 협의 국적과 성별도 각각 한국인과 남성으로 한정되지 않는 등 조선 후기로 가 면서 그 양상이 다채로운 면모를 보였다. 이 경우 작가의 실제 경험을 토대로 하였기에 협의 외모와 활약상이 사실적이고 구체적으로 표현되었다. 또 이들 작품에는 ‘협’을 중심 으로 한 당시의 시대상이 반영되어 있고, 작가의 창작 의도가 비교적 명확히 드러나는 경향이 있다. 이상과 같이 ‘협’이 한국 한시의 소재 중 하나로 자리 잡고 꾸준히 창작된 사실은 ‘협’ 이 法令을 어기거나 正道를 벗어난 인물임에도 불구하고 ‘협’의 특정 행위나 가치를 일 정 부분 인정한 사람이 적지 않았음을 보여준다.
