The literary historical evaluation and critical position of Manhae’s The Silence of the Beloved have already been extensively discussed in existing literary histories. Moreover, a variety of methodologies have been employed by numerous researchers to analyze and interpret Manhae’s texts in the field of academic research. This paper aims to offer a “new reading” by examining The Silence of the Beloved through the philosophy of Spinoza. Specifically, the purpose of this study is to explore Manhae’s poetics in an innovative way, using Spinoza’s concept of conatus, which affirms the drive to exist. The study analyzes the text through Spinoza’s philosophy, revealing the similarities between Manhae’s symbolically rich philosophical ideas and the Buddhist worldview, and Spinoza’s thought. By doing so, this paper proposes a ‘new reading’ through a detailed analysis of the text. Unlike previous studies that have explored the connections between Manhae’s work and Eastern philosophy, Buddhist thought, or the influence of Tagore, this paper proposes an original method of reading Manhae’s poetry that has not been attempted before. By analyzing The Silence of the Beloved through Western modern philosophy, particularly Spinoza’s thought, this study aims to expand the horizon of interpretation, establishing its uniqueness and significance.

만해의 『님의 침묵』에 대한 문학사적 평가와 입지에 관한 논의는 기존 문학 사에서 이미 충분히 이뤄졌다. 또한 다수의 연구자들에 의해 학술 연구 분야에 서도 다양한 방법론으로 만해의 텍스트는 꾸준히 분석 및 해석되어 왔다. 이에 본고에서는 ‘새로운 독법’을 시도하고자 한다. 구체적으로는 스피노자의 사상과 철학을 통해 만해의 시학을 독창적으로 살펴보는 것을 본 연구의 목적으로 세 웠다. 본론에서는 스피노자의 철학, 즉 존재를 긍정하는 코나투스의 시학으로 『님의 침묵』의 텍스트를 분석해 보았다. 또한 필자는, 고도로 상징화되어 있는 만해의 철학적 사유와 불교적 세계관이 스피노자의 철학과 상동성이 있음을 밝 히고 이에 착안하여, 본론에서는 구체적인 텍스트 분석을 통해 ‘새로운 읽기’를 시도하였다. 그간 답습되었던 동양철학이나 불교철학과의 연관성, 타고르와의 영향 관계 등을 규명한 연구 등과는 차별적으로 본고에서는 그동안 시도되지 않았던 만해 시 읽기의 독창적인 방법을 제안하고자 하였다. 서양 근대 철학을 통해, 특히 스피노자의 사유로 『님의 침묵』을 새롭고도 정밀하게 분석하여, 만 해 시에 대한 해석의 지평을 확장하였는 바 여기에 본 연구만의 독자성과 의의 를 두고자 한다.
