This paper analyzes the sense of ‘hometown’ in the classical Sino-Korean poetry of Zen Master Gyeongheo Seongwoo (鏡虛 惺牛; 1849–1912), a pivotal figure in the revival of Korean Zen Buddhism, from the perspective of diaspora. By nature, human beings experience the loss of their hometown, being cast away and wandering aimlessly. Therefore, individuals who have lost their hometown can be said to experience a form of diaspora. In this context, those who leave their home and lead a wandering life embody a diasporic existence. Such individuals, experiencing separation and alienation from their hometown, face the phenomenon of ‘hometown loss.’ Those who have encountered this loss live as displaced individuals, bearing a sense of nostalgia for a home they can no longer inhabit. This longing for home, while living as nomads in a foreign land, evokes a broader sense of diasporic consciousness. This study focuses on Gyeongheo, for whom his hometown became an irretrievable ‘past’ after his departure for monastic life, signifying ‘loss’ and existing as an ‘absence’ in reality. In this study, evoking ‘hometown’ is akin to recalling memories that are no longer present here and now. Chapter 2 explores the implications of hometown loss and the Buddhist concept of diaspora, drawing from Heidegger’s ontology, which aligns with the themes of this paper. Chapter 3 delves into the diasporic aspects depicted in Gyeongheo’s classical Sino-Korean poetry, analyzing the transition from ‘hometown’ to ‘foreign land’ and ultimately arriving at the state of ‘no-hometown’ from a Buddhist perspective. Gyeongheo’s poetry on his hometown, shaped by his state of no-thought practice, embodies the discourse of diaspora through the experience of hometown loss. His journey, which implies the discourse of diaspora and surpasses the limits of longing for home, transcends the notions of ‘return to the past’ or ‘homecoming.’ In this process, the simultaneous dissolution of both the concepts of hometown and foreign land, as enlightened realizations, leads to the discovery of a new consciousness of ‘no-hometown.’ Consequently, Gyeongheo’s poetry on the concept of home reveals the significance of the existential meaning of home, religiously reviving and recovering both the lost and forgotten sense of home, allowing beings to dwell eternally in a transcendent original homeland.

이 논문은 한국불교에서 선불교의 중흥자로서 선명한 궤적을 남긴 경허 성우 (鏡虛 惺牛; 1849~1912) 선사의 한시에 나타난 고향 의식을 디아스포라 관점으 로 분석했다. 본래적으로 인간은 고향으로부터 내던져져 정처 없이 떠돌아다니 는 고향 상실을 경험하고 있다. 그렇다면 실향민으로서 고향을 상실한 인간은 디아스포라를 경험하고 있다는 것이다. 그런 의미에서 고향을 떠나 방랑하는 존 재자들은 디아스포라적 삶을 살고 있는 것으로 파악된다. 이처럼 고향을 떠나와 실향을 경험한 존재자에게는 고향에서 유리되고 소외 되어 고향 상실의 현상을 맞이하기도 한다. 고향 상실을 경험한 존재자들은 고 향에 머물지 못한 상태로 실향민으로서 고향에 대한 향수를 지니고 살아간다. 이같이 타향에서 유목하는 가운데 고향을 그리워하는 실향민들의 삶을 광의적 인 정서로 디아스포라적인 의식을 가진다. 본고에서 주목한 경허는 출가를 통해 고향이 복귀할 수 없는 ‘과거’로서 존재 하며 ‘상실’로 이어지는데, 현실에서는 ‘부재’한 것이다. 이 논문에서 고향을 현 시한다는 것은 지금-여기-없는-기억을 소환하는 것과 다르지 않다. 이를 통해 2장에서는 본 논문과 맞닿아 있는 하이데거의 존재론을 바탕으로 고향 상실과 불교적 디아스포라의 의미를 타진할 수 있다. 3장에서는 경허 한시를 통해 ‘고 향’에서 ‘타향’으로 전개되는 디아스포라의 존재 양상을 통해 불교적 관점에서 ’무향‘으로 귀결하고자 했다. 경허의 고향 한시는 무념 수행의 경지에서 고향 상실이라는 디아스포라 담론 을 형성하고 있다. 디아스포라 담론을 함의하고 고향의 한계를 극복하고 있는 경허의 도정은 ‘과거의 귀환’이나 ‘시간의 귀향’을 넘어설 수 있게 된다. 거기에 고향과 타향을 선적 깨달음으로서 소멸시키는 가운데 무향 의식을 새롭게 발견 되었다. 이로써 고향 존재의 의미를 선적으로 밝히는 경허 고향 한시들은 상실 한 고향과 망각해버린 고향의식을 종교적으로 되살리고 회복함으로써 고유 주 체들을 초월적 본향에 영원히 머물게 한다.
