Muju-gun within the terrains of Baekdu Mountain Range is nestled in the mountainous region on the east side of Jeollabuk-do Province and a great source of underground resources such as gold, silver, bronze, and iron. Through recent earth surface investigation, around 120 sites of iron remains have been discovered in this region and this is the largest number among all single municipalities in Korea. Centered around the Namdaecheon Stream, which traverses through Muju-gun, the density of these sites is high along the Wondangcheon Stream and the Guryang Stream. In terms of administrative zones, they are included in Mupung-myeon, Seolcheon-myeon, and Anseong-myeon in Muju-gun. Although the archaeological excavations in search of the cultural heritages in Muju-gun are very scarce, it is a place where you can experience the history of Gaya, Baekje, and Silla through various historical relics and artifacts. A branch of beacon from Dangsan-ri Fortress in Muju extends through the beacon on Mt. Nogosan and Mt. Bonghwasan in Musu, reaching the Janggye Basin in Jangsu-gun. There also is a beacon on the mountain ridge extending from Mt. Sambongsan of the Baekdu Mountain Range to Mt. Seongmosan to the north of Najetongmun Gate. As a result of excavations in Daecha-ri, Muju-gun, it has been discovered that Silla expanded to Mugu-gun beyond Deoksanjae of the Baekdu Mountain Range in the late 5th Century and named the fortress of Hyeonnae-ri, Mupung-myeon Musanseong. Daegokso and Anseongso mentioned in 『Sejongsillokjiriji』 are assumed to be Cheolso, while Daegokso may be Dongso. Muju-gun, including Mt. Deogyusan, has been known as ‘the Clean Muju,’ but it could also be marketed as a tourism resource with historical and cultural value after exploring the historical value of the iron remains.
