The purpose of this study is to conduct a qualitative analysis of Gilssam wage labor in the Namhae region, examining the economic activity patterns and significance of these activities. This study focuses on villages in Namhae, where Gilssam wage labor was actively practiced, as well as the individuals who made it their main occupation. The investigation revealed that the nature of Gilssam’s wage labor varied according to the contracts between employers and pieceworkers. These agreements took different forms and were classified into Pilnaegi, Sagbe, and Bemaegi types. Furthermore, the scope of Gilssam’s wage labor was influenced by the geographical location of the villages, which were primarily inhabited by women, and by the availability of work. Generally, these activities were carried out within villages with a limited amount of work available. However, in the Namhae region, particularly in areas adjacent to the Hadong region, there was trade in Ramie Pilnaegi, facilitating exchanges between the two regions. While the women involved in Gilssam wage labor led lives of hardship, they took pride in being recognized as skilled workers and as the economic pillars of their households. The relationship between the Gilssam handcrafters and their employers can be viewed as based on mutual respect and compensation, embodying the values and significance of community solidarity.

이 글의 목적은 남해 지역의 길쌈품팔이를 대상으로 질적 조사하여 길쌈품팔이 의 경제 활동 양상과 의의를 고찰하는 데 있다. 남해 지역에서 길쌈 품팔이를 활발 하게 활동한 마을과 길쌈 품팔이를 전업으로 한 사람이 조사 대상이다. 남해 지역 의 길쌈품팔이를 조사한 결과, 고용주와 삯꾼의 계약에 따라 다양한 양상을 띠고 있었다. 고용주와 삯꾼 사이의 거래 방법이 다르게 나타났고, 필내기, 삯베, 베매기 로 구분되었다. 또한 길쌈품팔이는 여성들이 거주하고 있는 마을의 지리적인 위치 와 일감에 관한 정보에 따라 활동 영역이 다양하게 드러난다. 길쌈품팔이는 대체 로 마을 안에서 이뤄지고 일감은 한계가 있기 마련이다. 따라서 하동 지역과 인접 한 남해 지역에서는 하동 지역의 모시 필내기 일감을 거래하였고, 이를 통해 두 지 역 간에는 서로 교류가 있었던 것이 확인되었다. 길쌈품팔이로 나선 여성들의 생활은 궁핍했지만, 길쌈 기술자로 인정받고 가정 경제를 이끌어가는 주체로서 자부 심이 있었다. 길쌈품팔이와 고용주 사이에는 인정과 상호보상으로 작용하는 공동 체로서의 가치와 의의가 있다고 볼 수 있다.
