This study analyzes the image symbolism in film director Koreeda Hirokazu's Monster, which continues the trend of Japanese family films. This film has received attention for its three segmented storytelling that reinforces the ambiguity of the existence of monsters. However, in addition to these characteristics, there are dichotomous image symbols that make it difficult to track the monster in Monster. Accordingly, this study does not focus on the diversity of perspectives and interpretations shown in Monster, but seeks to study the process of dismantling the monster's existence through the dichotomous symbolism of the main image. As the narrative progresses, the audience becomes convinced that the existence of the monster is an invisible symbolic image, and at the same time expands it beyond the narrative. Specifically, to examine the dichotomous image symbols shown in ‘Fire and Water', ‘Adults and Children', and ‘School and Abandoned Train' represented by the main objects, characters, and spaces of Monster, they are interpreted as a dialectical image of purity and impurity, as a symbolic image of a violent signifier and a diagonal lined subject, and a synthetic image of a schizophrenic structure and a mystical structure. We may have a distorted belief that children who cannot properly name themselves are monsters. Continuing to think about this may be the message the director sends to the audience. Above all, it is expected that this study, which examines the dichotomy of image symbols in movies, will provide an opportunity to aesthetically expand the research focused on the theory of director Koreeda Hirokazu.

본 연구는 일본 가족영화의 흐름을 잇고 있는 고레에다 히로카즈 감독의 <괴 물>에 나타난 이미지 상징을 분석한다. 이 영화는 괴물이라는 존재의 모호함을 강화하는 분절된 스토리텔링으로 주목받은 바 있다. 그러나 이러한 특성 이외에 도, <괴물> 속 괴물을 추적하는 데 실패하게 만드는 이분법적 이미지 상징들이 존재한다. 이에 본 연구는 <괴물>에 나타난 관점과 해석의 다양성에 집중하는 것 이 아니라, 주요한 이미지의 이분법적 상징을 통해 괴물의 존재가 해체되어 가는 과정을 논구한다. 관객은 서사가 진행됨에 따라 괴물의 존재가 비가시적 상징 이 미지라는 점을 납득해가는 동시에, 그것을 서사 밖으로 확장시켜 나가기 때문이 다. 이에 <괴물>의 주된 오브제, 등장인물, 공간으로 대표되는 ‘불과 물’, ‘어른과 아이’, ‘학교와 폐열차’에 나타난 이분법적 이미지 상징을 살펴보기 위하여, 순서 대로 순수성과 비순수성의 변증법적 이미지, 폭력적 기표와 빗금 그어진 주체의 상징계적 이미지, 그리고 분열형태적 구조와 신비적 구조의 종합적 이미지로 해석 한다. 자신을 제대로 명명하지 못하는 아이들을 괴물로 믿어버리는 왜곡된 신념이 우리에게 있지는 않은지, 이에 관한 성찰이야말로 감독이 관객에게 던지는 메시지 일 것이다. 무엇보다도 이미지 상징의 이분법을 고찰하는 본 연구가 고레에다 히 로카즈 감독 영화의 이미지 미학을 확장하는 사례가 되기를 기대한다.
