This paper is about how communication and the humanities contribute to the consciousness growth of human in crisis through the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and the autobiographical memoir Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance, which covers the sorrows of American hillbillies. These two works show the process of reaching self-fulfillment through growth after overcoming crises and regaining their identity with the help of empathic communication with people around them. The primary counseling in Hillbilly Elegy is the close-knit combination between Mamaw and her grandson, Vance, and its counterpart in The Outsiders is the counseling between the narrator Ponyboy and his peer greaser Johnny. The reason why communication in both works is remarkably effective lies in the fact that the vulnerability in personal characteristics within various domains of consciousness growth is actively complemented by empathy-based communication, thereby strongly promoting motivation for personal development. In particular, it is noteworthy that the communication that started initially expands and transforms as circumstances change and the contextual conditions surrounding the main characters shift, ultimately acquiring a new attribute of multidimensionality. The value of communication to Vance is about finding his true identity associated with his social position as a hillbilly, and to Johnny, healing communication focusing on developing his emotional and psychological stability is his primary resource of support for growth. Additionally, Johnny’s case is characterized by the literary intervention provided by Ponyboy, which acts as an outstanding edifying factor for identity restoration and mental regeneration. Vance and Johnny develop their specific qualities and then return their capabilities they gained with the help of Mamaw’s inter-generational communication and Ponyboy’s peer communication to society from their respective positions. Therefore, this study suggests a strong edifying implication in that the human communication and the role of the humanities demonstrated in these two works come down to identity recovery, individual empowerment in their inner resources, and self-fulfillment at a level of social and public interest.

본 논문은 S.E. 힌튼의 소설 『소외자들』과 미국 힐빌리들의 애환을 다룬 J.D. 밴스의 자전적 회고록 『힐빌리의 노래』에서 소통과 인문학이 위기에 처한 인간의 의식성장에 어떻게 기여하는가를 다룬 연구이다. 두 작품은 위기에 처한 주인공이 주변 인물과의 공감적 소통의 과정을 겪으면서 위기를 극복하고 정체성을 회복하여 성장을 통해 결국 자아실현에 이르게 되는 과정을 보여준다. 『힐빌리의 노래』에 나타난 주요 소통은 할모와 손자 밴스 간의 긴밀한 조합이고, 『소외자들』은 서술자 포니보이와 그의 그리저 친구 자니와의 또래 간 소통이다. 두 작품에 나타난 소통이 탁월한 효과성을 보이게 된 이유는 그것이 의식성장에 관여하는 개인 자질의 여러 영역 중 개인의 특성과 관련된 특정 영역의 취약성이 공감에 근거한 소통으로 보완되면서 적성 개발과 성장을 향한 동기 유발이 강하게 이루어졌기 때문이다. 특히, 애초에 시작된 그 소통 작용은 상황이 변화되고 인물 주변 여건의 맥락이 바뀜에 따라 확장되고 전환된 결과, 소통의 다층성이라는 새로운 속성을 지니게 된다는 사실에 주목할 만하다. 밴스의 경우 소통의 가치는 어릴 적부터 그가 궁금해 하던 힐빌리로서의 그의 사회적 위상과 정체성을 찾은 것이고, 자니의 경우는 정서적·심리적 안정과 회복에 집중된 힐링형 소통이라는 점이다. 이는 아동기부터 인간 발달의 토대가 되는 최소한의 안정적인 양육 조건을 자니가 전혀 갖추지 못했기 때문이다. 또한 자니의 경우는 포니보이에 의해 제공된 인문학 작품의 개입이 자니의 정체성 회복과 정신적 재생에 탁월한 교화요소로 작용하는 특징을 갖는다. 밴스와 자니는 각각 상호 간에 긍정적으로 작용하는 소통과 또래 간 소통의 도움으로 자신의 특정 자질을 발달시키고 이렇게 획득한 역량을 각자 자신의 위치에서 사회로 환원시킨다. 따라서 본 연구는 두 작품에 나타난 인간소통과 인문학의 역할이 정체성 회복, 개인의 역량 강화, 그리고 사회 공익적 차원에서의 자아실현으로 귀결된다는 점에서 강력한 교화적 함의를 제시하고 있다.
