This study analyzed the discourse on Korean pop culture in the global media from the perspectives of critical discourse analysis (CDA) and systemic functional linguistics (SFL). The texts were analyzed by applying Wodak's contextual analysis model and Martin & White's evaluative language theory to 40 Hallyu-related reports from major Western media such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, BBC News, and the Associated Press. The results showed that while global media acknowledged the global success of K-pop and the Korean Wave, they were critical of the dehumanization of the idol industry, excessive commercialism, and lack of cultural identity. In particular, they pointed out ethical issues with the treatment of idols, emphasizing gender inequality and structural problems in Korean society and the gap between the success of the Korean Wave and the reality of Korean society. These discursive structures reveal ambivalent attitudes toward Korean culture, with fascination and wariness, praise and criticism. The global media presents a dual perspective, recognizing Korean popular culture as an innovative cultural phenomenon that is economically successful and globally influential, but at the same time emphasizing the ethical issues behind it. These representations recognize Korean popular culture as a complex and multilayered phenomenon, shaped by its global success and subsequent cultural shock, and at the intersection of Western-centered perspectives and reappraisals of Asian culture. By revealing the process of Hallyu discourse formation in global media and the ideological implications behind it, this study enhances our understanding of cultural representations and power relations in the globalization of Korean popular culture.

본 연구는 글로벌 미디어의 한국 대중문화 관련 담론을 비판적 담화 분석(CDA)과 체계기능언어학(SFL)의 관점에서 분석하였다. 뉴욕 타임즈, 워 싱턴 포스트, 가디언, BBC 등 서구 주요 언론의 한류 관련 보도 40건을 대 상으로 Wodak의 맥락 분석 모델과 Martin & White의 평가어 이론을 적용하 여 텍스트를 분석하였다. 분석 결과 글로벌 미디어는 K-pop과 한류의 세계 적 성공을 인정하면서도, 아이돌 산업의 비인간성, 과도한 상업주의, 문화 적 정체성 부재 등에 대해 비판적인 태도를 보였다. 특히 아이돌의 외모 관리와 성 상품화, 팬덤 문화의 과열 양상 등에 대해 윤리적인 문제가 있음을 지적하며, 한국 사회의 젠더 불평등과 구조적 문제와 한류의 성공과 한국 사회의 현실 간 괴리를 강조하였다. 이러한 담론 구조는 한국 문화 에 대한 매혹과 경계, 찬사와 비판이 공존하는 양가적 태도를 드러내고 있다. 글로벌 미디어는 한국 대중문화를 경제적으로 성공하고 글로벌 영 향력을 가진 혁신적인 문화 현상으로 인정하면서도, 동시에 그 이면의 윤 리적 문제점들을 강조하는 이중적인 시각을 보인다. 이는 한국 대중문화 를 복잡하고 다층적인 현상으로 인식하고 있으며, 이러한 표상은 한국 대 중문화의 글로벌 성공과 그에 따른 문화적 충격, 그리고 서구 중심적 시 각과 아시아 문화에 대한 재평가가 충돌하는 지점에서 형성되고 있다. 본 연구는 글로벌 미디어의 한류 담론 형성 과정과 그 이면의 이데올로기적 함의를 밝힘으로써, 한국 대중문화의 세계화 과정에서 나타나는 문화적 재현과 권력 관계에 대한 이해를 제고하였다.
