Adam Smith’s science of man is an evolutionary theory because it is based on the premise of change and explores the causes of human progress. Inherent in Adam Smith’s thought was a mechanism of evolution, which was represented by an invisible hand. The phrase “invisible hand” has been widely praised on the one hand, and publicly criticised on the other. There are only ‘three’ references to the phrase ‘invisible hand’ in Adam Smith’s various writings. For Adam Smith, the ‘invisible hand’ is the spontaneous order that emerges ‘from the bottom up’ as a result of natural selection, and that order is the unintended consequence of individual decisions. This short paper will briefly examine (i) the modern misunderstanding of Adam Smith’s invisible hand, (ii) his three references to the “invisible hand”, and (iii) Adam Smith’s real thought on the invisible hand.

애덤 스미스의 인간학(人間學)은 ‘변화’를 전제로 하여 ‘인간 진보의 원인’을 탐구하였으므로 ‘진화론’이라고 할 수 있다. 애덤 스미스의 생각에는 ‘진화 메커니즘’이 내재되어 있으며, 이는 “보이지 않는 손”(invisible hand)에 의해 표현되었다. ‘보이지 않는 손’이라는 말은 한편으로는 놀라운 통찰력으로 인해 크게 찬양되었지만, 다른 한편으로 는 오해로 인해 공공연히 비난받아 왔다. 애덤 스미스의 여러 저서들에 서 ‘보이지 않는 손’이라는 문구에 대한 언급은 딱 ‘세 번뿐’이었다. 애덤 스미스의 ‘보이지 않는 손’은 자연선택의 결과로 ‘아래로부터 생겨 나는 자연적 질서’이며, 그러한 질서는 개별 결정들이 가져다준 ‘의도하 지 않은 결과’이다. 따라서 본 소고에서는 현대에서의 애덤 스미스의 ‘보이지 않는 손’에 대한 오해, ‘보이지 않는 손’에 대한 언급, 그리고 ‘보이지 않는 손’에 대한 ‘진짜 애덤 스미스’의 생각을 중심으로 간략히 살펴보고자 한다.
