The ultimate purpose of this study is to clearly analyze, from the perspective of Cassirer’s cultural politics, the emergence, development, and transformation of political myths under the totalitarian and Nazi regimes of Western Europe in the early 20th century. Cassirer evaluates that modern totalitarian states or societies, such as fascism, subjugated humanity through the use of “political myths.” In this regard, the representative “political myths” of the 20th century were not natural outcomes of human free imagination. Cassirer identified five representative political myths associated with totalitarianism and fascism: Carlyle’s “Cult of Hero Worship,” Gobineau’s “Theory of Racial Inequality,” Hegel’s concept of the “State,” Spengler’s “Fatalistic View of History,” and Heidegger’s “Philosophy of Existence.” This study focuses on Hegel’s concept of the “State,” one of the five political myths identified by Cassirer. In Section II, the relationship between the core theses of Cassirer’s cultural politics and Hegel’s philosophy will be discussed, particularly in connection with the methods of modern political myths. Section III will examine the emergence of the concept of the “State” in Hegel’s Philosophy of Right and summarize the key elements of his theory of the state from the researcher’s perspective. Section IV will attempt a reading of Hegel from the perspective of Cassirer’s cultural politics. Above all, the discussion will conclude by reflecting on the influence of Hegel’s philosophy on modern political thought, the development and transformation of Hegel’s theory of the state, its connection to the Nazi regime, and the implications of Cassirer’s analysis. Through these discussions, we aim to achieve a clearer understanding of how mythic thinking and political forces converge, the mechanisms and operational principles through which political myths manifest in the political and cultural spheres, and the essence of political myths themselves.

본 연구의 궁극적 목적은 20세기초 서구 유럽의 전체주의와 나치 정권하에서 정치적 신화의 출현과 전개 그리고 변용 과정을 카시러의 문화정치학의 관점에서 명료하게 분석해내는 데 있다. 카시러는 파시즘과 같은 유형의 현대의 전체주의 국가 또는 전체주의 사회는 ‘정치적 신화’를 활용하여 인간을 정복한 것으로 평가한다. 그런 점에서 20세 기의 대표적인 ‘정치적 신화들’은 인간의 자유로운 상상력에서 나온 자연스러운 결과가 아니다. 카시러는 전체주의와 파시즘과 관련된 대표적인 정치적 신화로 다섯 가지를 제시하였다. 칼라일의 ‘영웅숭배 론’, 고비노의 ‘인종불평등론’, 헤겔의 ‘국가’ 이념, 슈펭글러의 ‘운명 론적 역사관’, 하이데거의 ‘실존철학’이다. 본 연구는 카시러가 지목한 다섯 가지 정치적 신화 가운데 헤겔의 ‘국가’ 이념에 초점을 맞추도록 한다. 특히 Ⅱ절에서는 카시러의 문화 정치학의 핵심 논제와 헤겔 철학의 관련성을 현대의 정치적 신화의 수법과 관련하여 논의하고자 한다. Ⅲ절에서는 헤겔 『법철학』에서의 ‘국가’ 개념의 등장과 국가이론의 핵심 내용을 연구자의 관점에서 발췌하여 정리하도록 한다. Ⅳ절에서는 카시러 문화정치학의 관점에서 헤 겔 읽기를 시도하고자 한다. 무엇보다 헤겔 철학이 현대 정치사상에 끼친 영향, 그리고 헤겔 국가이론의 전개와 변용, 나치 정권과의 관련성, 이에 대한 카시러의 분석과 그 의미를 되새겨보면서 논의를 마무 리하고자 한다. 이상과 같은 논의를 통해서, 우리는 신화적 사고와 정치 세력의 결탁이 실제로 어떻게 출현하는지, 정치적 신화들이 정치 현장과 문화 영역에서 어떤 기제 방식과 작동원리로 표출되는지, 그리 고 정치적 신화의 본질이 무엇인지를 명확하게 인식하게 될 것이다.
