This paper is a attempt to examine the history of the reception of Christianity in Korea from the perspective of a ‘topology’ that combines Area studies and cultural discourse. This attempt reflects the current shift in the way religion and Christianity are viewed in religious studies. These perspectives are shifting toward Area studies and a tendency to interpret Christianity through the lens of culture. Historically, a distinction has been made between “Christian”, which is the institutional level and “Christianity”, which is the essence of Christianity and “The Christians”. “The Christians” refers to the manifestation of Christianity in various cultural areas as well as religious institutions. The development of Christianity in Korea has been characterized by the development of various “The Christians” according to the characteristics of each region. This approach attempts to approach the difference between the gospel, which is essentially a seed, and the soil in which it grew and the various products it produced through the concept of “The Christians”.

이 논문은 한국에서 기독교 수용의 역사를 지역학과 문화 담론이 결합한 ‘토폴로지’(topology)의 시각에서 들여다보려는 시도이다. 이러한 시도는 현재 종교학에서 종교를 바라보는 시각과 기독교를 바라 보는 시각의 변화를 반영한다. 이러한 시각은 지역학적 연구로 변화하 고 있고 문화를 매개로 기독교를 해석하려는 경향으로 전환하고 있다. 역사적으로 제도적인 차원의 ‘기독교’(Christian)와 기독교의 본질인 기독교성(Christianity)과 ‘기독교적인 것들’(the christians)은 구 별될 수 있다. ‘기독교적인 것들’은 종교 제도적인 영역뿐만 아니라 다양한 문화 영역 속에서 기독교성이 드러난 것을 의미한다. 한국의 기독교가 발전하는 데에 각 지역적 특성에 따라 ‘기독교적인 것들’이 다양하게 전개되었다고 본다. 이러한 접근은 본질로서 씨앗인 복음과 그것이 자라난 토양과 씨앗이 자라난 다양한 생산물의 차이를 ‘기독교 적인 것들’이라는 개념으로 접근하려는 시도이다.
