The security environment is worsening due to North Korea's continued provocations, a decline in defense human resources, and a reduction in the standing army. In the changing defense environment, building a strong national defense force has become an essential task, and one of the solutions to the problem is to develop a reserve force system. In particular, discussions on the importance of using women reserve forces should be urgently addressed. Since research related to the use of active-duty female soldiers has been mainly conducted and research related to the women reserve forces is lacking, we attempted to examine the historical activities and systems of the women reserve forces and draw implications in terms of organization, education, training, equipment, and supplies. As a result of the study, the women reserve forces achieved great growth during the Korean War, but stagnated and regressed thereafter. To improve this, first, discharged women soldiers should be used as reserve forces. Second, there is a need to establish a system that provides incentives for young women to apply to the reserve forces. Third, education and training appropriate to the mission and position must be reflected. Lastly, the provision of equipment and supplies must be improved to take into account operations in situations of national crisis. The significance, implications, and limitations of other papers were described, and suggestions for future research were made.

북한의 계속되는 도발과 국방 인적자원의 감소, 상비군 감축 등 안보환경이 열악해지고 있다. 변화되는 국방환경에 효율적으로 대처하기 위해 강한 국방력 건설은 필수적인 과제가 되었으며 이에 대한 다양한 해결방안 중의 하나는 예비군제도를 발전시키는 것이다. 특히, 여성예비군 활용의 중요성에 대한 논의가 시급하게 다루어져야 한다. 그동안 현역 여군의 활용에 관련된 연구가 주로 이루어졌으며 여성예비군과 관련된 연구는 부족하였기 때문에 여성예비군 제도 발전을 통해 국방력 건설에 기여하기 위해 연구를 진행하였다. 본 연구는 문헌연구를 바탕으로 역사에 나타났던 여성들의 활약상과 제도를 살펴본 후, 조직편성, 교육 훈련, 장비 및 물자 측면에서 그 시사점을 도출하였다. 여성예비군은 6·25 전쟁시에 많은 성장을 이루었으나 그 이후로는 정체 및 퇴보하였다. 이를 개선하기 위해 첫째, 전역하는 여군을 예비군으로 활용하여야 한다. 둘째, 젊은 여성들 이 예비군에 지원토록 인센티브를 부여하는 제도를 마련할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 임무와 직책 에 맞는 교육훈련을 반영해야 한다. 마지막으로 국가위기 상황에 활동하는 것을 고려하여 장비 및 물자 지급이 개선되어야 한다. 기타 논문의 의의와 시사점, 제한사항을 기술하였고 향후연구에 대해 제언하였다.
