This study analyzed the works of poet Shin Kyung-rim and through them, attempted to examine his sense of compassion for the marginalized. Poet Shin Kyung-rim experienced the painful aspects of the times he lived in with his whole body and sublimated that hardship into poetry. The background of Shin Kyung-rim’s poetry is a devastated rural area and an urban slum, and the people living there are also marginalized and deprived, such as powerless farmers, souls who died unjustly, and the homeless. They have suffered the steep upheaval and historical pain of Korean society and have been struggling to support the lowest class of this society. This is why we cannot ignore their poverty and suffering. In his poetry, the poet sang for the lowly, marginalized, and deprived with a poetic sense of mission that represents the pain of the people. The poetic emotions that he expresses while being with them and comforting them are melted into his poetry as he feels the situation and pain of the times he is living in and must live in with his whole body. However, his poetry is not passionate or excessive. Sometimes, a sense of self-mockery is revealed, but it is shown in a calm manner like a photograph. Rather, it shows an embarrassing self-portrait by entering the photograph itself. In it, it tells us that the image is the image of the poet, the image of our people, and the image of us. By showing that the marginalized are ultimately our closest friends and neighbors, and perhaps our own reality, it recognizes that they are people we must live with, empathize with their pain, and comfort them.

본 연구는 신경림시인의 작품들을 분석하고 이를 통해 소외된 자를 향한 연민의식을 살펴보고자 하였다. 신경림 시인은 자신이 살아가고 있 는 시대의 아픈 단면을 온몸으로 겪으면서 그 고단함을 시로 승화시켜내 고 있었다. 신경림이 쓰고 있는 시의 배경은 황폐한 농촌이고 도시 빈민 가이며, 그 속에서 살아가는 사람들 역시 힘없는 농민, 억울하게 죽은 영혼들, 노숙자 등 한결같이 소외되고 결핍되어 있다. 이들은 한국 사회 의 가파른 격동과 역사적 아픔을 고스란히 겪으면서 이 사회의 가장 낮은 계층을 힘겹게 떠받치고 있다. 이것이 그들의 가난과 고통을 외면할 수 없는 이유이다. 시인은 그의 시 속에서 민중의 아픔을 대변하는 시적 소명의식을 가지 고 낮고 소외되며 결핍된 이들을 위해 노래하였다. 그들과 함께하고 그들 을 위로하면서 담아내는 시적 정서는 그가 살고 있고, 살아가야 할 시대 적 상황과 아픔을 온몸으로 느끼며 시 속에 녹아있다. 그렇지만 그의 시 는 격정적이거나 과도하지 않았다. 때때로 자조 섞인 한의 정서가 내비쳐 지면서도 담담하게 사진처럼 펼쳐서 보여주고 있다. 오히려 사진 속에 스스로 들어가 부끄러운 자화상을 보여주기도 한다. 그 속에서 그 모습이 시인의 모습이며 우리 민족의 모습이고 바로 우리의 모습이라고 말해주 고 있다. 소외된 자들이 결국 우리의 가장 친한 친구이자 이웃이며 어쩌면 우리 자신의 처한 현실이라는 것을 보여줌으로서 함께 살아가야 할 대상임을 인식하고 그들의 아픔을 공감하며 위로하고자 하였다.
