This study seeks a comparative analysis of how overseas Korean communities adapt to and integrate into their host societies, focusing on the key factors that influence this process. By examining the experiences of Koreans in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan alongside those in the United States, Australia, China, and Japan, the study explores the impact of differing immigration and ethnic policies on the social integration of overseas Koreans. Data was collected from a 2022 survey of 2,679 adult overseas Koreans across 10 countries, including 186 respondents in Kazakhstan and 234 in Uzbekistan. The main findings are as follows: social integration varies significantly by generation and country. First-generation Koreans in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan display moderate systemic integration but struggle with psychological integration, while later generations in Kazakhstan are well integrated across all dimensions. In the U.S. and Australia, first-generation Koreans are systemically integrated but lack psychological integration, whereas later generations align with either assimilationist or multicultural integration. In China and Japan, first-generation Koreans face challenges with both systemic and psychological integration. Later generations in China show multicultural integration, while those in Japan remain marginalized.

이 연구는 재외한인이 거주국 사회에 적응하고 통합되는 과정과 이것에 영향을 미 치는 주요 요인을 비교 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 카자흐스탄과 우즈베키스탄에 거 주하는 한인들의 경험을 미국, 호주, 중국, 일본의 한인들과 비교함으로써, 거주국의 이민정책과 민족 정책의 차이가 재외한인의 사회적 통합에 미치는 영향을 탐구한다. 2022년에 10개국의 2,679명의 성인 재외한인을 대상으로 한 설문조사에서 자료를 수집하였으며, 이 중 카자흐스탄에서는 186명, 우즈베키스탄에서는 234명이 응답하 였다. 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 재외한인의 거주국 사회통합은 세대 및 국가에 따라 크게 달라진다. 카자흐스탄과 우즈베키스탄의 1세대 한인들의 경우, 제도적 통합은 중간 수준이나 심리적 통합에서는 어려움을 겪고 있다. 카자흐스탄의 후속세대는 모 든 차원에서 잘 통합되고 있다. 미국과 호주에서는 1세대 한인들이 제도적으로 통합 되어 있으나 심리적 통합은 부족한 반면, 후속세대는 동화주의 또는 다문화주의적 통 합을 나타내고 있다. 중국과 일본에서는 1세대 한인들이 제도적 및 심리적 통합 모두 에서 어려움을 겪고 있다. 중국의 후속세대는 다문화적 통합을 보이는 반면, 일본의 후속세대는 여전히 주변화되고 있다.
