This paper is the result of a study of the literary life and novels of Jeon Byeong-soon, a novelist who was active in the Korean literary scene from the 1960s to the 1980s but has been forgotten in literary history, with a focus on women's writing and the figures of the female subject. The literary life of Jeon Byeong-soon, a novelist from Gwangju, shows the writer's original experience as a marginal person through the Korean War and the period of industrialization and modernization. Through her essays, this paper reveals the content and specificity of her literary life by analyzing her experience of crossing the gap between Seoul-centered texts triggered by the migration of her family life and texts from the Jeollanam-do region, the gap between pure literary art and women's literature as a woman writer, and the gap between breadwinner and writer's self-consciousness as a woman and novelist living in her time. Thus, the core of her marginal sensibility seems to lie in her worldview of distrust of absolute authority and ideology. This paper also analyzes how this sense of marginalization in her literary life, coupled with her perception of women's writing, reveals differences in the representation of female characters in her novels. In her novels set in the 1970s, Madame Mist, Good/Wise Wife, and Unmarried Single Women, female subject figures include middle-class married women with children, female breadwinners, female bosses, housemaids, and unmarried single women, foregrounding characters with marginal sensitivities to the normativity of the family system and everyday life of the time. In Madame Mist, Madame Yoon and the wife of Jeong-woo's brother, who works as a female boss, help Jeong-woo, a female subject anchored in the gendered norms of the family system and everyday life of the time, to break free from the gendered authority of male subjects through the strategy of de-mythologizing. In Good/wise Wife, Hyun-ju, a female subject with a different positionality as a housemaid rather than a wife within the same normativity, helps Myeong-hwa and thoroughly examines the normativity of the ‘wise mother and good wife’ discourse of the 1960s and 70s. Furthermore, in Unmarried Single Women, Wal-la's narrative examines the contradictions between the normativity of women's lives, including the feudalism of society, motherhood, and women's lives and loves. The narrative also relativizes the gender norms that subjugated women in Korean society in the 1960s and 70s through the ending in which Wal-la, as an unmarried single woman with children, gives her surname to her children. Finally, by examining the unique position of her literary life and novel world in the period of the formation of the field of Korean women's literature, this paper argues that the approach to Jeon's auteur and literary theory needs to be more actively investigated in the future.

본고는 1960~80년대 한국문학 장에서 활동하였으나 문학사에서 잊혀져온 소설가 전병순의 작가적 생애와 소설세계를 여성 작가의 글쓰기와 여성 주체의 형상을 중심으로 연구한 결과다. 광주 출신 소설가 전병순의 작가적 생애는 한국전쟁 및 산업화·근대화 시기를 거치며 경계인으로서 작가의 원체험을 보여준다. 본고는 전병순의 에세이 텍스트를 통해 가정 생활의 이주에서 촉발되는 서울을 중심으로 한 문단과 전남 지역의 문단 사이, 여성 작가로서 순문예와 여성문학의 사이, 당대를 살아간 여성이자 소설가로서 생계부양자와 작가적 자의식 사이를 가로지르는 경험을 분석함으로써, 전병순의 작가적 생애의 내용과 특이성을 규명했다. 이에 따르면 전병순의 경계인적 감수성의 핵심은 절대적인 권위와 이념에 대한 불신임의 세계관에 있는 것으로 보인다. 또한 본고는 전병순의 작가적 생애가 갖는 이 경계인으로서의 감각이 여성 작가의 글쓰기에 대한 인식과 동반하여, 전병순의 소설세계에서 여성 주체 형상의 재현과 차이를 드러낸다는 점을 살펴보았다. 󰡔안개부인󰡕과 󰡔현부인󰡕 그리고 󰡔독신녀󰡕를 통해 1970년대를 기점으로 한 전병순의 소설 속 여성 주체 형상은 중산층 기혼 유자녀 여성, 여가장, 여사장, 식모, 독신 여성 등을 아우르면서, 당대의 가족제도와 일상적 삶의 규범성에 경계인적 감수성을 지닌 인물들을 전면에 배치한다. 󰡔안개부인󰡕에서 윤마담과 여가장인 올케가 당대 가족제도와 일상적 삶의 젠더화된 규범 속에 정박된 여성 주체인 정우를 남성 주체들의 젠더화된 권위의 탈신화화 전략을 통해 이탈하게 돕는다면, 󰡔현부인󰡕에서는 동일한 회로 속 아내가 아닌 식모라는 상이한 위치성을 가진 여성 주체인 명화를 돕는 여성 주체이자 당대 현모양처 담론의 규범성을 철저히 응시하는 현주가 배치된다. 더 나아가 󰡔독신녀󰡕에서는 월라라는 여성 주체의 서사가 사회의 봉건성, 어머니됨, 여성의 삶과 사랑 등 여성의 생애 규범과 그 모순을 응시하면서 독신 여성이자 유자녀 여성으로서 아이들에게 자신의 성을 붙여주는 귀결을 통해 1960~70년대 한국사회에서 여성을 순치화하는 젠더화된 규범들을 상대화하는 모습을 보여준다. 이를 통해 본고는 한국전쟁 이후 한국의 여성 문학 장이 구성되던 시기에 활동한 전병순의 작가적 생애와 소설세계가 갖는 독특한 위상을 살펴봄으로써, 전병순의 작가론과 작품론에 대한 접근이 앞으로 더 활발하게 조명될 필요가 있음을 주장하였다.
