This study aimed to analyze the impact of art therapy experiences on self-expression and interaction in a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through qualitative research and to explore its significance. The subject of the study was a 7-year-old boy diagnosed with ASD who participated in 36 sessions of 70 minutes of art therapy once a week. Data collection included artwork, audio recordings and transcripts, therapy journals, supervision materials, behavior observation notes, and data gathered from counseling with the parents. For data analysis, a qualitative case study method was applied, which involved repeatedly observing and analyzing various materials. The study results identified six major themes and sixteen sub-themes. The findings indicated that the subject, who initially lacked confidence in self-expression and experienced anxiety and fear about drawing, gradually developed through activities using various media within art therapy. This progression led to the child interacting with peers, depicting family members, and showing increased interest in and expression of the surrounding environment. Furthermore, the child, who initially could not engage with the themes of art therapy and was focused solely on personal interests, began to express relationships with family and friends through drawings, proudly shared and displayed the artwork with the parents, and facilitated new forms of interaction. Based on these results, the significance and limitations of the study were discussed.

본 연구는 자폐스펙트럼장애 아동의 미술치료 경험이 자기표현과 상호작용에 어떤 변 화를 주었는지 질적 연구를 통해 분석하고, 그 의미를 탐구하는데 있다. 연구대상은 자폐 스펙트럼장애를 진단받은 만 7세 남아로 미술치료는 주 1회, 70분씩, 총 36회기 진행하였 다. 연구를 위해 회기별 작품을 사진으로 남기고, 녹음 및 축어록, 치료 일지, 슈퍼비전 자료, 회기 중 연구대상의 행동을 기록한 행동 관찰 노트, 보호자와의 상담을 통한 자료 를 수집하였고, HTP와 자유화의 변화 과정을 포함한 자료를 반복하여 관찰하고 분석하 였다. 연구 결과 총 6개의 상위주제와 16개의 하위주제가 도출되었으며, 그 내용은 다음 과 같다. 미술치료 초기 자신이 표현하고자 하는 것에 자신감이 없고, 그리기에 대한 두 려움이 있던 연구대상은 미술치료 안에서 여러 매체를 통한 활동이 이루어지면서 자신의 마음을 표현하고, 친구들과 상호작용하는 모습을 보였으며, 가족의 모습을 묘사하고 자신 이 만든 작품을 보호자에게 자랑하고 전시하는 등의 행동변화를 보였다. 본 연구는 이러 한 결과를 바탕으로 연구의 의의와 제한점에 대해 논의하였다.
