Journey to the West, the novel written by Wu Cheng’en (1500~1582) during the Ming Dynasty, is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of China and a representative example of fantasy literature. It tells the story of the Tang monk Xuanzang and his three disciples on their journey to retrieve Buddhist scriptures. While it appears to be a mythical and fantastical adventure on the surface, it incorporates various philosophical elements from Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. In particular, Zen Buddhism has a profound influence on the themes, characters, and key episodes throughout the novel. The Jiangsu region, where Wu Cheng’en lived, was the birthplace and flourishing area of Neo-Confucianism during the Ming Dynasty. Therefore, it is highly likely that Wu Cheng’en was influenced by the prevailing Neo-Confucianism while writing Journey to the West. The underlying spirit revealed in the detailed descriptions and between the lines of the novel is precisely this Buddhisized Neo-Confucian spirit. Through research on Journey to the West, it can be observed that Zen Buddhism is predominantly featured throughout the novel, indicating a close connection to “Chan” (Zen). The characters and events in Journey to the West are all derived from the archetypal stories of the patriarchs of Zen Buddhism. The novel establishes a complete Zen Buddhist ideological system, encompassing Zen history, anecdotes, principles, and terminology, making it thoroughly infused with Zen.

『서유기(西遊記)』는 명(明)대의 오승은(吳承恩, 1500~1582)이 지은 소설로, 중국 4대 기서(奇書)의 하나이며 대표적인 신마소설(神魔小說)로 삼장법사와 세 제자의 불경 구도 여정을 그린 장편 소설이다. 표면적으로는 신화적이고 환상적인 모험 이야기로 보이지만, 그 이면에는 유교, 도교, 불교 등 다양한 사상적 요소가 녹아있다. 특히 선불교는 서유기의 주제 의식과 등장인물, 주요 에피소드 등 작품 전반에 걸쳐 깊이 있는 영향을 미치고 있다. 서유기의 저자 오승은이 살았던 강소(江蘇) 지역은 명대(明代) 양명학[심학]의 발원지이자 번성 지역이었다. 따라서 오승은이 서유기를 창작하는 과정에서 당시 유행하던 심학의 영향을 받지 않았을 리 없다. 실제로 서유기의 구체적인 서술 행간에 드러나는 정신은 바로 이러한 불교화된 심학 정신이다. 서유기에 대해 연구함에 따라, 서유기 전반에 걸쳐·선(禪)과 밀접한 관련이 있음을 발견할 수 있다. 서유기에 등장하는 인물이나 사건은 모두 선불교의 사조·오조·육조의 이야기에서 비롯된 경우들이 많다. 서유기는 선불교 사상 체계를 완전하게 구축하여 선불교 역사와 선불교 이야기, 선불교 이치, 선불교 용어 등 전체적으로 선불교적 요소가 가득하다.
