This article examines when, how, and why interest in the history of the global Catholic Church emerged in Korean society since the introduction of Catholicism. It highlights that in the 1930s, research on the history of the world Catholic Church can be found in the Pyongyang Diocese, which was led by the Maryknoll Society, an American missionary organization. At the time, Monsignor John E. Morris of the Pyongyang Diocese emphasized that Catholics should not only be well-versed in Catholic faith and ethics but also in the history of the Church. He believed that it was only natural to first focus on the global history of the Catholic Church before delving into the history of the Catholic Church in Korea. Furthermore, he expressed the desire for Korean Catholics to produce their own research on world Catholic Church history, rather than merely translating texts from the French or American Catholic Church. Through this, he aimed to help Korean Catholics understand how the Korean Church was connected to the global Church and to foster a new awareness of the close relationship between Korean history and world history. Two laypersons, Kim Gu-jeong and Jo Cheon-su, responded enthusiastically to the bishop’s vision. Kim Gu-jeong took the lead, followed by Jo Cheon-su. Kim focused on ancient world Church history, while Jo worked on the medieval period. Their writings demonstrated a deep interest in the history of persecution and martyrdom in the Church. Additionally, they sought to understand the relationship between Protestantism and Catholicism, which was widely discussed in the Pyongyang region, by examining so-called "heresies" and other religions. They also paid significant attention to the relationship between the Church and the state, as well as politics and religion. At the same time, the Pyongyang Diocese showed a keen interest in the study of Korean Catholic Church history. Based on their understanding of world Catholic Church history, they attempted to produce an independent account of Korean Catholic Church history written by Korean Catholics. This effort sought to clarify the historical position of the Korean Catholic Church within the broader context of world Catholic history and, at the same time, explore the direction that the Korean Catholic Church should take under Japanese colonial rule. However, the efforts of the Pyongyang Diocese to research world Catholic Church history have not been properly continued to this day. Currently, independent research on world Catholic Church history by Korean clergy or laypersons is rare, with most available works being translations. This highlights the urgent need for renewed efforts to research the history of the global Catholic Church within the Korean Catholic community.

이 글에서는 한국 사회에 천주교가 수용된 이래 언제, 어떻게, 왜 세계 천주교회사에 대한 관심이 일어났는가에 대해서 다루었다. 이에 1930년 대에 들어와서 미국에서 만들어진 메리놀 외방전교회가 담당한 평양교구 에서 세계 천주교회사 연구를 찾아볼 수 있다는 사실을 설명하였다. 당시 평양교구의 교구장이었던 모리스 몬시뇰은 천주교 신자라고 한다 면, 가톨릭 신앙이나 윤리만이 아니라, 교회의 역사에 대해서도 잘 알아야 한다는 사실을 강조하였다. 그는 교회의 역사 가운데에서도 한국의 천주 교회사보다도 먼저 세계의 천주교회사에 대해서 관심을 가지는 것이 당연 하다고 보았다. 그것도 단순히 프랑스나 미국의 천주교회에서 나오는 서 적을 번역하는 것보다도 한국인 신자에 의해서 만들어진 세계 천주교회사연구가 나오기를 바랐다. 이를 통해서 한국 천주교회가 어떻게 세계 천주 교회와 연결되고 있으며, 한국사만이 아니라 세계사와의 밀접한 연관성에 대해서도 신자들에게 새로운 인식을 주고자 했다. 평양 교구장의 바람에 적극적으로 호응했던 인물은 모두 평신도인 김 구정과 조천수였다. 김구정이 이를 주도했으며, 이후 조천수가 이어받았 다. 김구정은 고대의 세계 교회사 부분을, 조천수는 중세의 세계 교회사 부 분을 서술하였다. 이러한 서술을 통해서 세계 교회사의 박해사와 순교사 에 대해서 깊은 관심을 보였다. 또한 이른바 ‘이단’, 다른 종교에 대한 관심 을 통해서 평양지역에 널리 퍼져있던 개신교와 천주교의 관계에 대해서도 이해하고자 하였다. 더 나아가서 교회와 국가 그리고 정치와 종교의 관계 에 대해서도 커다란 관심을 가지고 서술하였다. 이와 함께 평양교구에서는 한국 천주교회사의 연구에도 적극적인 관심 을 드러내었다. 세계 천주교회사에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 한국 천주교회 사 역시 한국인 신자들에 의한 독자적인 서술을 시도하였다. 이것은 세계 천주교회사에서 한국 천주교회가 어떠한 역사적 위치를 차지하고 있는가 를 밝히는 것이며, 동시에 일제 강점기라는 현실 속에서 한국 천주교회가 나아가야 할 방향을 모색하려는 것과도 연결되었다. 그러나 평양교구의 세계 천주교회사 연구를 위한 이러한 노력은 이후 지금까지 제대로 계승되지 못하였던 것으로 생각한다. 현재 세계 천주 교 회사에 대한 한국인 사제나 평신도의 독자적인 연구는 거의 찾아지지 않 고, 대부분이 번역이라는 사실에서 잘 알 수가 있을 것이다. 여기에서 오늘 한국 천주교회의 세계 천주교회사 연구가 더욱 절실하게 필요하다는 사실 을 다시금 강조해 두고 싶다.
