The purpose of this study is to examine in-depth the teaching life of the teachers of the elementary branch school located in remote areas and to suggest implications and improvement measures. To this end, the researcher complete participated in the branch school and conducted qualitative research centered on ethnography such as participant observation, in-depth interview, and field material examination. The data collected through qualitative research were analyzed based on the teacher's job and role, and consisted of four upper categories and 19 lower categories: ‘Must-do jobs’, ‘Jobs I have done so far’, ‘Jobs I feel like I should do’, and ‘Jobs that I can’t do’. As a branch school teacher, ‘Must-do jobs’ included ‘managing multiple grade class’, ‘guiding students school life’, ‘handling school affairs', and ‘attending meetings and training', and ‘Jobs I have done so far’ includes ‘taking care of students things to eat', ‘visiting the main school', and ‘helping students go home from school'. ‘Jobs I feel like I should do’ consisted of ‘get a call to school’, ‘managing school facilities’, ‘responding to local residents’, ‘making lunch for students’, ‘giving students a variety experiences’, ‘taking care of student’s daily life’, and ‘cooperating with branch schools’, while ‘Jobs that I can’t do’ included ‘improving school facilities’, ‘going on a business trip after class’, ‘taking only one grade to participate in experience activities’, and ‘persuading parents about closing branch school’. Based on these results, it was considered necessary to improve the teacher selection process in which teachers with a clear sense of role in ‘Must-do jobs’ can transfer to the branch school in order for the teacher's job to be performed correctly and the role to be fulfilled properly to achieve better education activities for the branch school. In addition, the government, the Office of Education, and principal proposed a change in their perception of branch school and the need for support.

본 연구는 벽지 지역에 위치한 초등학교 분교장 교사의 교직 생활을 심층적으로 살펴보고 시사점과 개선방안 제시를 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 연구자는 분교장에 완전참여관찰하며 참여관찰, 심층면담, 현지 자료 조사 등 문화기술지 중심의 질적 연구를 수행하였다. 질적 연 구를 통하여 수집한 자료는 교사의 직무와 역할을 기준으로 분석하여 분교장 교사로서 ‘해야 하는 일’, ‘이제껏 해왔던 일’, ‘해야 할 것 같은 일’, ‘차마 어찌할 수 없는 일’ 등 4개의 상위 범주와 18개의 하위범주로 구성하였다. 분교장 교사로서 ‘해야 하는 일’은 ‘복식학급 운영하 기’, ‘학생 생활 지도하기’, ‘교무분장 업무 처리하기’, ‘회의 및 연수 참석하기’ 등이 있었으며, ‘이제껏 해왔던 일’은 ‘먹을거리 챙겨주기’, ‘본교 방문하기’, ‘학생 하교시키기’ 등이 도출되었 다. ‘해야 할 것 같은 일’은 ‘학교 전화 받아내기’, ‘학교 시설 관리하기’, ‘지역주민 응대하기’, ‘점심 챙겨주기’, ‘다양한 경험 시켜주기’, ‘일상생활 돌보기’, ‘분교장끼리 협력하기’ 등으로 구 성하였으며, ‘차마 어찌할 수 없는 일’은 ‘학교 시설 개선하기’, ‘학교 비우고 출장 가기’, ‘한 학년만 데리고 체험 활동 참여하기’, ‘통폐합 설득하기’ 등이었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 교사 의 직무가 올바르게 수행되고 역할을 제대로 이행하여 더 나은 분교장 교육 활동이 이루어지 기 위해서는 ‘해야 하는 일’에 대한 역할지각이 명확한 교사가 분교장에 전입할 수 있는 교사 선발 과정의 개선이 필요하다고 보았다. 또한 국가와 교육청, 관리자의 분교장에 대한 인식 변화와 지원의 필요성을 제안하였다.
