Recently, many universities are expanding the free-major division. The ‘free-major division’ is a system in which students do not choose a major when entering university, but decide on a major after their freshman year. It is a system to eliminate barriers between departments and disciplines, respond to new social and industrial demands, and guarantee students right to choose a major. This study was designed to derive support measures for major exploration and selection through qualitative analysis of the major exploration and selection process of students in the first year of the free-major division. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 first-year students currently enrolled at H University. H University has expanded its recruitment unit and operates a major track system in which students choose two majors after major exploration upon entering the second year. The main research results are as follows. First, it was found that many students entering university do not decide on a major. Second, it was found that the level of participation in basic major courses was the highest during the major exploration process, and basic major courses had the greatest influence on major selection. Third, the pattern of participation in extracurricular programs for major exploration differed depending on the level of students’ major decisions, and there were differences in the factors that influenced the selection of majors. Fourth, various infrastructures inside and outside the school were utilized in the major exploration process, and the need for expanded information provided within the school was confirmed. The results of this study can be used as basic data for understanding the major exploration process of students who entered the free-major division in their first year and for developing a major exploration program.

최근 많은 대학에서 무전공제를 확대하고 있다. ‘무전공제’는 학생이 대학 입학 시 전공 구분을 하지 않고 2학년 이후 전공을 정하는 제도로 새로운 사회․산업 수요에 대응하고 학생들의 전공선택권을 보 장하기 위한 제도이다. 본 연구에서는 무전공제 학생의 1학년 시기 전공 탐색 및 선택 과정에 관한 질 적 분석을 통해 무전공제 입학생의 전공탐색 및 선택 지원 방안을 도출하고자 하였다. 이에 모집단위를 광역화하고, 입학 후 전공탐색을 거쳐 2학년 진급 시 2개 전공을 선택하여 이수하는 전공트랙제를 운 영 중인 수도권 소재 H 대학 1학년 학생 20명을 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대학에 입학하는 학생 중 다수가 전공을 결정하기 않고 입학하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 전공 탐색 과정에서는 전공기초교과 참여수준이 가장 높고 전공기초교과가 전공 선택에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 학생의 전공결정수준에 따라 전공탐색을 위한 비교과프로그램 참여 양상이 상이하였으며, 전공 선택 시 영향을 미치는 요인에도 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 전공탐색 과정에서 교내외 다양한 인프라를 활용하고 있었으며, 교내 제공 정보의 확대 요구가 확인되 었다. 본 연구의 결과는 무전공제로 입학한 학생들의 1학년 시기 전공탐색 과정을 이해하고, 전공탐색 프로그램 개발을 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
