The purpose of this research is to make a new attempt at the expressive area of fashion design by using the characteristics of the rock image derived from analysis on rocks for the costume product. This study, which consists of theoretical review through literature research and planning and production of works, focuses on the characteristics of rock images by type and the analysis is done in terms of the three formative elements of form, texture, and color rather than of the scientific properties of rocks. The researchers in this study took and collected 508 actual rock images through the field survey, and used them as materials for analysis and application of rock images in theoretical consideration and production. The results of this study are as follows: First, it was possible to derive individual formative characteristics from the images of each type of rock classified according to the cause of its formation. Second, through the analysis of fashion design cases, it was observed that rock images are applied as motifs in many fashion collections, irrespective of season or style. Third, when utilizing actual rock photos for material development, it was possible to obtain designs for effective artwork materials with dramatic texture and color expression even by simple shooting and editing processes. Fourth, rather than limited applications of certain rocks, the study suggested the potential of broad design applications inherent in rock images by attempting artwork production with various types of rocks. Fifth, in the artwork production research, it was possible to maximize the expressive effect of rock images by applying techniques of digital textile printing and, partially, those of quilting. Through these efforts, the study aims to explore the unique aesthetic values conveyed by nature, discover the diversity inherent in rock images, and reflect on the potential design applications.

본 연구는 암석을 대상으로 분석하여 도출된 암석 이미지의 특징을 패션디자인 작품에 응용함으로써 패션 디자인의 표현영역에 있어 새로운 디자인 시도를 실행하고자 하는 데에 목적을 두었다. 문헌 조사를 통한 이론적 고찰과 이를 토대로 하는 작품 기획 및 제작으로 구성되는 본 연구는 암석이 갖는 과학적 속성보다는 형태, 질감, 색채의 세 가지 조형 요소의 측면에서 분석하는 종류별 암석 이미지의 특징에 집중한 연구이다. 본 연구의 연구자는 현장답사를 통해 실제 암석 사진 508장을 촬영 및 수집했으며 이론적 고찰과 작품 제작 에서 암석 이미지의 분석과 응용을 위한 자료로 활용하였다. 이는 패션디자인에 있어 암석 이미지 응용의 참고 자료가 되는 동시에 기존 선행연구들과의 차별화를 도모하는 기준 역할이 될 수 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 생성 원인에 따라 구분된 암석의 종류별 이미지에서 개별의 조형적 특징을 도출할 수 있었다. 둘째, 패션디자인의 사례 분석을 통해 암석 이미지는 시즌과 스타일의 구분 없이 많은 패션 컬렉션의 모티프로 응용되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 소재 개발에 실제 암석 사진을 응용할 경우 지극히 단순한 촬영과 편집과정만으로도 극적인 질감 및 색채 표현이 효과적인 작품 소재의 도안을 얻을 수 있었다. 향후 실사 자연물 이미지를 응용한 패션 소재 디자인의 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다. 넷째, 일부 한정된 암석의 응용보다는 다양한 종류의 암석을 응용한 작품 제작을 시도하여 암석 이미지에 내포된 폭넓은 디자인 응용 의 가능성을 제안하였다. 다섯째, 작품 제작 연구에서 디지털 텍스타일 프린팅 기법과 부분적으로 퀼팅 기법 을 적용함으로써 암석 이미지 표현 효과를 극대화할 수 있었다. 이러한 시도를 통해 대자연이 전하는 특유한 미적가치에 관하여 탐구하여 암석 이미지가 가진 다양성의 발견과 현대 패션디자인 분야에서의 디자인 응용 의 가능성을 고찰하는 기회를 얻고자 한다.
