“Haedongyeomsa (海東艶史)” is a book compiled by Cha Sang-chan (1887–1946), who gathered and recorded stories of women. It was published by Hansung Book Co., Ltd. in 1937 and reissued in 1949 after Cha Sang-chan’s death. Cha Sang-chan, a journalist during the Japanese colonial period and an editor-in-chief of the magazine “Gaebyeok,” is known for founding the magazine. Whereas the works of Cha Sang-chan have been investigated actively, only two studies pertaining to “Haedongyeomsa” written by him have been reported. Both of these studies focus on the bibliographic review of the book. Hence, this study focuses on “Part 2: Famous Wives and Famous Concubine.” The book was read and interpreted based on two keywords, i.e., ”modern” and “women,” which are the themes of the book. In “Haedongyeomsa”, Cha Sang-chan perceived women from a male-centered perspective; however, he was also interested in women’s movements and education and believed that women’s roles and activities should be expanded. It appears that he actively supported women’s knowledge and culture by compiling books for the public, particularly those pertaining to women’s knowledge and culture. The stories can be categorized into two main branches: “content regarding fidelity and fidelity to women’s duties” and “content that reveals women’s outstanding talents.” Additionally, these branches indicate whether women show passive or active attitudes in their lives. The fact that many female writers as well as their poems are introduced in “Haedongyeomsa” reflects the interest of the compiler and is relevant to the contemporary trend. Cha Sang-chan actively supported women’s knowledge and culture by introducing female writers with outstanding literary talent and their works; moreover, he translated those works into Korean to accommodate Korean readers. After scrutinizing the book using the two keywords “modern” and “women,” we conclude that Cha Sang-chan compiled the book to contribute to women’s knowledge and culture.

해동염사는 차상찬(車相瓚, 1887∼1946)이 여성들의 이야기를 모아 기록하여 편찬한 책이다. 1937년 한성도서주식회사에서 출간되었고 차상찬 사후인 1949년 재간본이 출간되었다. 차상찬은 일제강점기 시기의 언론인이자 잡지 개벽을 창 간한 편집인으로 알려져 있다. 차상찬에 대한 인물 연구는 비교적 활발하게 축적 이 되어있는 반면에, 차상찬이 쓴 해동염사에 대한 선행 연구는 2편이 존재할 뿐 이다. 이 연구는 모두 저서에 대한 서지적 검토를 중심으로 하고 있기에, 이 논문 에서는 ｢제2편 명부인(名夫人)․명첩(名妾)｣에 주목하고자 했다. 이 책이 쓰여진 시기인 ‘근대’, 그리고 이 책의 테마로 삼고 있는 ‘여성’이라는 두 개의 키워드를 통 하여 읽고 의미를 밝혔다. 해동염사에 나타난 차상찬의 시선은 여전히 남성 중심의 시각에서 여성을 바라보기도 했지만, 여성 운동 및 교육에도 관심을 갖고 여성들의 역할과 활동 범주 가 더 넓어져야 한다고 생각했던 것으로 판단된다. 대중들을 위해, 그 중에서도 여 성들의 지식과 교양을 위해, 책을 편찬하여 여성의 지식과 교양을 위한 적극적 지 지를 했던 것으로 읽힌다. 이야기는 크게 ‘여성의 직분에 대한 충실 및 절개에 대 한 내용’과 ‘여성의 뛰어난 재능’을 드러내는 내용의 두 갈래로 나누어볼 수 있었 다. 이는 여성이 자신의 삶에서 소극적 태도를 보여주고 있는지, 적극적 태도를 보 여주고 있는가의 갈래이기도 하다. 해동염사에 여성 문인이 대거 소개되고, 그 문인들의 한시 작품이 소개되고 있는 것은 편찬자인 차상찬의 관심이면서, 당대의 흐름과도 연결되는 지점이다. 뛰 어난 문학적 재능을 지닌 여성 문인들을 소개하고, 그들의 작품을 소개함으로써 독자들이 읽어볼 수 있도록, 한글로 번역하여 기술하였다. ‘근대’와 ‘여성’, 이 2개의 키워드를 가지고 책을 면밀히 살펴본 결과 여성들의 지식과 교양을 위해 차상찬이 이 책을 편찬했다는 결론에 도달하였다.
