This essay explores the thought and spirituality of Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941), who was a pioneering thinker in formulating modern views of “mysticism.” First, it focuses on how Underhill defines mysticism, where one’s contemplation of God is paralleled with the creative act of an artist. Those who have an artistic vision of the Reality see into the true nature of all created things with the eyes of detached purity and love, meditating between the transcendent world and their fellow humans. Second, Underhill employs three different aspects of yearning, which portray symbolically the soul’s mystic path. The imagery of “Pilgrim” represents a seeker’s long and hard journey towards the Divine, while “Spiritual Marriage” gives shapes to the relentless craving of the contemplative for union with God. The idea of “Spiritual Transmutation” is connected to regeneration of the self, including moral, psychological, and spiritual transformation. Third, the article examines two types of contemplative practices found in Underhill’s corpus, “Detachment” and “Mortification.” Critical of some extreme and oppressive forms of asceticism, Underhill urges readers to cultivate a balanced sense of spirituality between our inner and outer life. For her, self-denials are not important in themselves. The focal question is how to focus steadily on God and dwell in the Love’s presence.
