Although wine may not be the most important alcoholic beverage in Korea, it is an important imported item that cannot be ignored among various alcoholic drinks, and it is an indispensable item for understanding Western medieval Christian society. This thesis aims to examine the meaning of wine by focusing on the works of St. Ambrose, who paid more attention to wine than anyone else and tried to ensure that wine gets its proper place in Christianity. To this end, the edition of the complete works of Ambrose (Opera omnia di Sant’Ambrogio), a reliable critical edition, as a basis for previous research was used, and try to understand the meaning of wine St. Ambrose’s works through his method of understanding the Bible. St. Ambrose mentioned ‘wine’ a total of 293 times in his books, and directly quoted 95 passages from the Bible related to wine, thereby establishing a new framework for understanding wine in medieval Western society based on Christianity. He enjoyed using the allegorical interpretation and the framework of the tripartite division used by Philon and Origenes to understand the Bible, and the wine in the works of St. Ambrose can also be understood in terms of its meaning according to this tripartite division method. In a practical sense, St. Ambrose presents a clear understanding of the origin and purpose of wine based on the Bible, the scripture of Christians. He also accurately looks at the abuse of wine, which was causing various problems at the time, and focuses on the appearance of the Saints in the Bible to solve this problem, moving toward a moral meaning. Christians who learn lessons from the stories of the Saints should understand the pros and cons of wine and use it correctly. However, St. Ambrose does not stop at this practical and moral meaning but elevates wine to a mystical level. Wine is a good product made through human labor, but is also mysteriously transformed into the blood of Christ. Many of St. Ambrose's stories related to wine are meaningful to us today. St. Ambrose's concept of wine, which goes beyond the practical and moral meaning to a mystical level rather than simply an effort to moderate wine consumption, can help us look at the perspective of Western medieval society opening a new era and can provide a basic foundation for how the Christian society of the time understood wine.

포도주가 비록 우리나라에서 가장 중요한 주류는 아닐지라도, 다양한 주류 가운데에서 무시할 수 없는 수입 품목이면서, 서구 중세 그리스도교 사회를 이 해하는데 빼놓을 수 없는 물품이다. 여기서는 누구보다 이 포도주에 대해 깊은 관심을 기울였고, 그리스도교에서 포도주가 올바른 위치를 차지하도록 노력한 암브로시우스의 작품을 중심으로 포도주의 의미를 알아보고자 한다. 이를 위해 비평본 중에 신뢰할 수 있는 암브로시우스 전집(Opera omnia di Sant’Ambrogio)을 이용한 선행 연구를 기초로, 그의 성경 이해 방식을 통하여 그의 작품 속에 나타난 포도주의 의미를 파악한다. 암브로시우스는 자신의 저서에서 총 293회에 걸쳐 포도주를 언급하였고, 포 도주와 관련된 성경 구절을 95번이나 직접 인용함으로써, 그리스도교가 바탕이 된 중세 서구 사회에서 포도주를 이해하는 새로운 틀을 마련한다. 그는 성경을 이해하기 위해 필론과 오리게네스 같은 이들이 이용했던 우의적 해석과 삼중 분할의 틀을 즐겨 사용했으며, 그의 작품 속 포도주 역시 이러한 삼중 분할 방 식에 따라 의미로 파악해 볼 수 있다. 실제적 의미에서 암브로시우스는 그리스도인들의 경전인 성경을 기반으로 포 도주의 기원과 목적을 명확하게 이해하도록 제시한다. 또한 당시 여러 문제를 가져오던 포도주의 남용을 정확히 바라보면서, 이것을 해결하기 위해 성경에 나 타난 성조들의 모습에 집중하여 도덕적 의미로 나아간다. 성조의 이야기를 통해 교훈을 얻은 그리스도인들은 포도주의 장단점을 올바로 이해하고, 그것을 올바 로 사용해야 한다. 하지만 암브로시우스는 이러한 실제적, 도덕적 의미에서 머 무르지 않고, 신비적 차원으로 포도주를 끌어 올린다. 포도주는 인간의 노동을 통해 만들어진 좋은 생산물이면서도 신비롭게 그리스도의 피로 변환된다. 포도주와 관련된 암브로시우스의 여러 이야기는 오늘 우리에게도 의미를 지 닌다. 단순히 포도주를 절제하기 위한 노력만이 아니라, 실제적, 도덕적 의미를 넘어 신비적 차원으로 나아가는 암브로시우스의 포도주 개념은 새로운 시대를 여는 서구 중세 사회의 시각을 바라볼 수 있도록 도와주면서, 당시 그리스도교 사회가 어떻게 포도주를 이해했는지에 기본 바탕을 열어줄 수 있기 때문이다.
