This study examined European festivals searching for the characteristics of arts and culture pursued by each region and cases of urban regeneration. Revitalization of arts and culture can be a catalyst that revives cities and regional cultures that experience decline due to various reasons. Valuable use of cultural and artistic spaces in urban environments can not only provide a new place for art experiment by cultural and artistic programs but also serve as local communities. In addition to the value of public art, contemporary artistic expressions and sentiment expressed in festivals can play the function of urban regeneration, such as participation in arts education and regional connections. This study explored the preservation of traditional arts and methods of accepting new arts along with festivals, and examined the role of arts and culture in our lives and the relevance of urban regeneration. The study aimed to find implications for urban regeneration, cultural and artistic revitalization, and regional connections, and to seek practical strategies for arts and culture that can be implemented in festivals.

본 연구에서는 유럽의 축제를 통해 지역마다 추구하는 문화예술의 특성과 도시재생의 사례를 살펴 보았다. 문화예술 활성화는 여러 가지 이유로 쇠퇴하는 도시와 지역문화에 새로운 활기를 주는 요소가 될 수 있다. 도시 환경에서 문화예술로의 가치 있는 공간 활용은 문화예술 프로그램의 새로운 예술 실험센터가 되기도 하고 지역 커뮤니티의 역할을 하기도 한다. 따라서 축제에서 나타나는 동시대 예술 표현과 정서는 예술교육의 참여와 지역 연계 등 공공예술의 가치 외에도 도시재생의 기능을 보이기도 한다. 이 연구에서는 축제와 함께 전통예술의 보존과 새로운 예술의 수용 방법을 이해하고, 우리 삶에서 문화예술의 역할과 도시재생의 관련성을 고찰하였다. 이를 통해 도시재생과 문화예술의 활성화 및 지역연계의 시사점을 찾고 축제에서 구현할 수 있는 문화예술의 실제적인 전략을 모색하고자 한다.
