This study examined the disability perceptions of principals and vice principals of elementary, middle, and high schools to find out how their contact experience with people with disabilities affects their social distance toward people with disabilities. A survey was conducted on 118 principals and vice principals from A and B district office of education in Gyeonggi Province regarding the quality and frequency of contact with the disabled and social distance. The findings revealed several key insights: First, the respondents felt closer to physically disabled individuals compared to those with mental disabilities. Second, the willingness to accept relationships at the family level with both physically and mentally disabled individuals was found to be very low. It was noted that there is a significant burden associated with forming personal and enduring relationships, such as becoming family, with disabled individuals, more so than permitting relationships at national or general life levels. Third, multiple regression analysis showed that positive experiences of contact with disabled individuals significantly reduced social distance towards physically disabled individuals. Lastly, simple regression analysis identified the frequency of disability awareness education and positive contact experiences with disabled individuals as factors influencing social distance towards mentally disabled individuals. Based on these findings, the study discussed practical strategies for improving the quality of mandatory disability awareness education within schools. This research provides important implications for how disability awareness training can be effectively implemented in educational settings.

본 연구는 초⋅중⋅고등학교 교장⋅교감의 인식을 조사하여 장애인과의 접촉경험이 장애인에 대 한 사회적 거리감에 미치는 영항을 알아보고자 하였다. 경기도 A⋅B교육지원청에 속한 초⋅중⋅고 등학교 교장⋅교감 118명을 대상으로 장애인과의 접촉 경험 여부와 접촉 경험의 질, 그리고 사회적 거리감에 관한 설문조사를 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 연구대상은 정신적 장애인보다 신체적 장애인을 더 가깝게 느끼는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 사회적 관계 차원으로 신체적 장애인과 정신적 장애인에 대해 모두 가족차원에서의 관계를 허용하는 정도가 매우 낮게 나타났다. 국가나 일반 생활 차원에 서 장애인과의 관계를 허용하는 것보다 매우 개인적이고 지속적인 관계인 장애인과 가족이 되는 것 에는 큰 부담을 느끼고 있음을 확인하였다. 셋째, 다중회귀분석 결과로 장애인과의 접촉 경험 중 긍정적 경험이 많을수록 신체적 장애인에 대한 사회적 거리감을 가깝게 느끼는 데에 유의미한 영향 을 미치는 것을 확인하였다. 마지막으로, 단순회귀분석으로 나타난 정신적 장애인에 대한 사회적 거 리감에 영향을 미치는 요인으로는 장애인식개선교육의 경험 빈도와 장애인과의 긍정적 접촉 경험으 로 드러났다. 본 연구 결과를 바탕으로 법정 의무교육인 인식개선교육의 질적 개선 방안에 대한 실 천적 논의를 하였다.
