This article discusses the middle-class consciousness shown in Cho Se-hee’s literature. The works selected for this analysis are 503 Man’s Hope Factory, Angel’s Moon, and In the Grass, which were published after 1980, and have been overlooked in Cho Se-hee’s literature. The series A Small Ball Shot Up by a Dwarf, which has been noted only as a model of labor literature in previous research, presents not only a variety of contradictions caused by industrialization, but also the responsibility of the middle class, the possibility of solidarity between the middle and the lower classes, and the structural irrationality of the conglomerate system produced by power. The A Small Ball Shot Up by a Dwarf series, which symbolizes the beginning and end of Cho Se-hee’s literature, is a work at the beginning of the pursuit of ‘authenticity’ of criticism and participation in public issues. In Angel’s Moon are the characters ‘Young-hee,’ who symbolizes the middle class, and ‘Kyung-woo,’ who represents the capitalist class. The author tried to show the expansion and role of the middle class and the future direction of the capitalist class by setting them as characters related to the A Small Ball Shot Up by a Dwarf series, published in the previous period. It may be a problem with the awkward ending of Angel’s Moon, but in the case of Yeong-hee and Kyung-woo, the failure of the two to move toward coexistence can also be understood as an intentional device to powerfully reveal the contradictions of an era in which sincerity does not prevail.

본고는 그간 조세희 문학에서 간과되어온 작가의 중산층 의식에 대해 논구하 였다. 이를 분석하기 위해 선택한 작품은 「503호 남자의 희망공장」, 「천사의 달」, 「풀밭에서」이다. 그간 선행연구에서 노동 문학의 전범(典範)으로서 강조되 어 온 『난장이가 쏘아올린 작은 공』 연작은 산업화로 인해 벌어진 다양한 모순 외에도 중산층의 책임 의식과 중산층과 하층민의 연대 가능성, 권력이 양산한재벌 체제의 구조적 불합리성 등을 제시하고 있다. 조세희 문학의 시작이자 종 결을 상징하는 『난장이가 쏘아올린 작은 공』 연작은 공적 문제에 대한 비판과 참여라는 ‘진정성’ 추구의 시작에 놓인 작품인 것이다. 진정성의 문제는 이후 시기 작품에서도 뚜렷하게 드러나는데, 이 글에서 중점적으로 살펴본 「천사의 달」은 중산층을 상징하는 ‘영희’와 자본가 계층을 상징하는 ‘경우’를 통해 각 계 층이 시도한 상생적 연대 기획과 그 실패 과정을 효과적으로 보여준 작품이라 할 수 있다. 조세희는 『난쏘공』 연작과 관련성을 가진 인물들을 이후 작품에 재 배치하여 1980년대 시대적 담론을 제시하고 있다. 기술 개발의 거대화와 부의 편중에 대한 문제의식을 확보했던 작가는 중산층의 확장과 역할론, 자본가 계층 의 나아갈 방향성 등과 같은 문제를 「천사의 달」에 기입하였다. 이 작품의 결말 자체가 가진 어색함의 문제일 수도 있겠으나, 영희와 경우 두 인물이 상생으로 나아가지 못하는 실패는 오히려 진정성이 투과되지 못하는 모순적 시대 그 자 체를 보여주는 것이라고 할 수 있다.
