This paper aims to explore the motif of betrayal and the grotesque characterization in Kang Shin-jae’s short stories from the 1950s to 1960s, through the fresh lens of her primal experiences in childhood. Although Kang did not produce many autobiographical works, the significance and impact of her childhood experiences are substantial throughout her writings. The emotions of her childhood, as revealed in her essays, are marked by intense loneliness, sorrow, and shattered innocence. The abrupt changes she experienced while moving to Cheongjin, Hamgyeong Provence, especially her parents’ discord and her father’s death, are seen as traumatic events that decisively influenced her literary imagination. In the autobiographical stories reflecting her childhood experiences, young protagonists are depicted as unfortunate children who fail to distance themselves from the adult world and are helplessly engulfed in their suffering. At the core of this misfortune lies the issue of fathers’ abandonment and betrayal. The motif of betrayal consistently permeates Kang Shin-jae’s short stories, with the torn souls of the betrayed characters manifesting as grotesque appearances, and this pattern is observed across multiple works. Considering how Kang Shin-jae concealed autobiographical elements in her essays and novels, it is essential to understand the motif of betrayal in relation to the “overwhelming primary marks” imprinted on her psyche before external shocks like oppressive education or the Korean War occurred. By signifying the vulnerable child exposed defenselessly to the miseries of the adult world as an archetypal existence of the wounded souls in Kang Shin-jae’s stories, this study seeks to uncover new approaches to her works by drawing on autobiographical elements.

본고는 강신재의 1950~60년대 단편소설에 반복적으로 등장하는 배신의 모티 프와 그로테스크한 인물 형상화의 문제를 작가의 유년기 원체험에 비추어 사유 해보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 강신재는 자전적 소설을 그다지 많이 남기지 않았으 나, 작가가 체험하고 기록한 청진에서의 유년기가 그의 작품 세계 전반에 갖는 의미와 비중은 결코 작다고 할 수 없다. 수필에 드러난 강신재의 유년기 정서는 절실한 고독과 비애, 그리고 파괴된 동심으로 특징지어진다. 강신재가 함경도 청 진으로 이주하면서 겪었던 급격한 변화들, 특히 부모의 불화와 아버지의 죽음은 그의 소설적 상상력에 결정적 영향을 미친 일종의 외상적 사건으로 보인다. 강신 재의 유년기 체험이 반영된 자전적 소설에서 어린 주인공들은 어른 세계와의 거 리두기에 실패하고 그들의 고통에 불가항력으로 포섭된 파괴된 동심의 소유자로 그려진다. 이 불행의 한가운데에는 아버지의 가출과 배신이라는 문제가 도사리 고 있다. 배신의 모티프는 강신재의 소설을 일관되게 관류하는데, 배신당한 인물 의 찢긴 영혼이 그로테스크한 외양으로 현시된다는 점이 여러 작품에 걸쳐 고르 게 관찰된다. 강신재가 유년기의 자전적 요소를 수필과 소설 곳곳에 숨겨 놓은 양상을 기억한다면, 배신의 모티프는 억압적 교육이나 한국전쟁 같은 외부 충격 이 발생하기 이전에 그의 내면에 새겨진 ‘압도하는 일차적 자국’과 관련지어 이 해할 필요가 있다. 어른 세계의 불행에 무방비로 노출된 취약한 어린 존재를 강 신재 소설 속 상처받은 영혼들의 원형적 존재로 의미화함으로써, 본고는 자전적 요소를 길어 올려 강신재 소설에 새롭게 접근하는 길을 마련해보고자 했다.
