In the 1990s, Japan was witnessing a diversified world. The collapse of the ‘economic myth’, the crack of the ‘55–year system’, and the end of the big story of the crisis of the ‘peace constitution’ shook Japanese society and pushed it into extreme change. This trend encompassed all generations. As the traditional family composition of a working husband and a wife protecting the family seriously shakes, a change comes to the image of the ‘community’. Generations facing ‘anxiety’ for the future are exposed to crises such as ‘alienation’ consciousness and gradually fragment them. Minority in Japan and changes in gaze on Koreans in Japan were also visible in this magnetic field. Japanese newspaper media, in particular, continues to report sensitively to this social trend, regardless of whether it is conservative, moderate, or progressive. It can be said that these newspapers’ tone on the establishment of universal human rights, such as the ‘comfort women issue’, ‘right to vote’, and the ‘legal status of the third generation in Japan, was in contact with Japan’s diversified future. However, after the Cold War, the world faced another crisis and order. The religious confrontation and conflict that caused the 9/11 terrorist attack opened the 21st century, stained with violence and anger, so indomitable in the era of ideology. A sense of crisis stimulates the desire to return to a unified world again. And in the process, the ‘symbiosis’ with the weak, created by ‘alienation’ and ‘anxiety’, faces a reactionary movement of ‘union’ and ‘oppression’ with the strong. This is why Japanese society has taken the path of a rightward shift, and Japanese society has become a major target of “hate.” Will Japanese journalism be able to restore the balance between political and commercial desires and self-purification ability? This is the point when attention is paid to its move.

이 글은 1990년부터 현재까지 일본의 주요 일간지 아사히, 마이니치, 요미우리신문 의 기사에 주목해, 이들 미디어가 어떠한 방식으로 재일사회를 조명해 왔는가를 살펴 본 것이다. 1990년대 일본은 다원화된 세계를 목도하고 있었다. ‘경제 신화’의 붕괴, ‘55년 체제’의 균열, ‘평화헌법’의 위기라는 커다란 이야기의 종말은 일본사회를 격동 시키며 극심한 변화 속으로 밀어 넣게 된다. 이러한 흐름은 모든 세대를 아우르는 것이었다. 일하는 남편과 가정을 지키는 아내라는 전통적인 가족 구도가 심각하게 흔들리면서 ‘공동체’ 이미지에 변화가 찾아온다. 미래에 대한 ‘불안’에 직면한 세대들 은 ‘소외’ 의식과 같은 위기에 노출되며 점차 파편화해 간다. 일본 안에 있는 마이너리 티, 재일조선인에 대한 시선 변화 또한 이러한 자장 안에서 가시화된 것이었다. 특히 일본의 신문 미디어는 보수, 중도, 진보를 가리지 않고 이 같은 사회 흐름에 민감하게 반응하며 보도를 이어간다. ‘위안부문제’, ‘참정권’, 재일 3세의 ‘법적지위’ 와 같은 보편적인 인권 확립에 대한 이들 신문의 논조는 다원화된 일본의 미래 모습 과 맞닿아 있었다고 할 수 있다. 하지만 냉전 이후 세계는 또 다른 위기와 질서 앞에 놓인다. 911테러를 초래한 종교 대립과 갈등은 이데올로기의 시대에 전혀 굴하지 않을 만큼, 폭력과 분노로 얼룩진 21세기를 열게 된다. 위기감은 재차 일원화된 세계 로의 회귀 욕망을 자극한다. 그리고 그 과정에서 ‘소외’와 ‘불안’이 만든 약자와의 ‘공생’ 기조는, 강자와의 ‘연합’과 ‘억압’이라는 반동적 움직임에 직면하게 된다. 일 본사회가 우경화의 길을 걷고, 재일사회가 ‘혐오’의 주요한 타깃이 된 이유이다. 과 연 일본의 저널리즘은 정치적, 상업적 욕망과 자정 능력 사이에서 균형을 회복할 수 있을 것인가. 재일사회와 재일조선인이라는 존재를 향한 이들의 조명에 그 핵심 적인 실마리가 담겨 있을 가능성이 농후하다는 점에서, 이에 주목한 연구가 향후에 도 이어지기를 기대한다.
