This study investigated and analyzed how and to what extent Korean music performance assessments were conducted in middle schools in Seoul during the 2023 academic year. The contents and results of the study are as follows: First, the number of middle schools conducting Korean music performance assessments is significantly low. Only 200 schools conducted Korean music performance assessments more than once a year. Among these, only 52 schools conducted Korean music performance assessments at least once a year across all grades where music was offered, and only 2 schools conducted Korean music performance assessments every semester across all grades. Therefore, practical improvement measures such as strengthening music teachers' expertise in Korean music assessment, developing Korean music evaluation tools, and devising methods for presenting these materials should be proposed. Second, most schools conduct Korean music performance assessments in the expression domain. Among the schools conducting Korean music performance assessments, 121 schools (60.5%) assess students only in the expression domain through the activity of playing Jang-gu Jang-dan, regardless of grade level. To address this issue, it is necessary to provide field guidance on teaching Korean music in a balanced manner across different domains and evaluating various skills. Additionally, methods that reflect pre- and post-instruction evaluations of music performance should be proposed and implemented in practice. It is hoped that subsequent research will discuss concrete improvement measures for Korean music performance assessments.

본 연구에서는 2023학년도에 서울시에 있는 중학교에서 국악 수행평가를 얼마나, 어떻게 이루어졌는지를 조사하고 분석하였다. 연구의 내용과 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저, 국악 수행평가를 시행하는 중학교 수는 현저히 적다. 국악 수행평가를 연중 1회 이 상 시행하는 학교는 200개교뿐이며, 음악 과목을 편제한 모든 학년에 1년 동안 1회 이상 국 악 수행평가를 시행한 학교는 52개교, 편제한 모든 학년에서 매 학기 국악 수행평가를 시행 한 학교는 단 2개교뿐이다. 이에 음악 교사의 국악 평가 전문성 강화 방안, 국악 평가도구나 자료 제시 방법 고안 등 실질적인 개선안이 제안되어야 한다. 둘째, 대부분 표현 영역으로 국악 수행평가를 시행한다. 국악으로 수행평가하는 학교 중 121개교가 표현 영역으로만 국악 수행평가를 시행하며, 학년 구분 없이 장구 장단을 치는 활동으로 학생을 평가한다. 이를 개선하기 위해서는 국악을 영역별로 균형 있게 가르치고 다양한 기능을 평가하도록 현장에 안내가 되어야 한다. 또 음악 수행에 대해 가르치기 전과 후를 확인하여 평가에 반영하는 방법을 제시하고, 적용할 수 있도록 하여야 한다. 후속 연구에서는 국악 수행평가의 구체적인 개선 방안이 논의되기를 기대해 본다.
