This study aims to explore the structure and linguistic properties of foreign news articles in the textual-linguistic perspective, and to clarify the genre characteristics of foreign news articles based on the findings. A foreign news article is a trans-edited text, which generally involves a combination of translation and editing processes. For this study, a qualitative method was employed. A total of 62 articles were extracted and their characteristics were analyzed in terms of textual structure and language usage. The study found that the articles displayed an inverted pyramid structure. Articles had been reframed and reorganized to deliver the trans-editor’s subjective perspectives. The study also looked into the foreign news articles, focusing on extracted noun phrases, citation expressions, and overgeneralized expressions. These expressions have a close relationship with pragmatics, including the intention and viewpoint of the writer. The noun phrases are used for the concise delivery of the main ideas and events. Writers interpret events as things or results, not as processes. The writer uses citation expressions as a resource to present their findings and convince the readers that their work is trustworthy and to elaborate on previous statements. And overgeneralized and unspecified expressions implicitly convey the writer’s opinions.

본 연구는 텍스트언어학적 관점에서 국내 언론사에서 번역한 외신 기 사의 텍스트 구조와 언어학적 특징을 분석하여 그 장르적 특징을 밝히고 자 하였다. 이를 위해 원 텍스트인 해외 언론의 보도 기사를 번역하고 편 집한 국내의 외신 기사 총 62편을 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 분석 결과, 외신 기사는 하나의 독립된 텍스트로서 뉴스 가치를 가지는 데 담화공동체의 규범과 장르적 특징, 작성자의 관점과 평가에 따라 재맥 락화되고 재구성되며, 전형적이고 일관된 구조와 특징을 지닌다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 구조면에서는 핵심적인 정보는 전면에 배치하고 주변 적이고 잉여적인 정보는 뒤로 보내는 특징을 보였다. 이는 독자의 흥미 유발과 효율적인 정보 전달을 목적으로 하는 구성이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 외신 기사에는 원 텍스트를 편집, 재구성한 텍스트임을 보여주는 언어 장치가 나타났다. 기사 작성자는 매체의 보도와 배경 정보 등을 요 약한 후 재개념화하고, 정보의 밀도를 높이기 위해서 명사화된 표현을 선 택하였다. 정보 전달의 객관성을 확보하거나 작성자의 견해나 해석을 완 곡하게 드러내거나, 또는 추가적인 정보를 제공하고자 할 때는 인용 표현 을 활용하였다. 외신 기사에서 사용된 과일반화되거나 모호한 표현은 작 성자의 의견을 암시적으로 표출하는 전략적 표현으로 이해될 수 있다.
