This paper aims to benefit Korean preachers in the 21st century by analyzing Hermann Bavinck’s Eloquence in relation to sermon delivery. In his Eloquence, Bavinck specifically urged the development of the gift of speech. However, he addressed the principle, the nature, and the form of eloquence from a more fundamentally Reformed perspective, addressing not only effective sermon delivery but also the character of the preacher as an orator. First, regarding the principle of eloquence, Bavinck recognized the interrelationship between eloquence and character by pointing out that a person must be whole before he can speak well. Bavinck points out that the life and secret of eloquence, its source, is the emotions behind the intellect and will. Second, with regard to the nature of eloquence, Bavinck points out that oratory must be aimed at the whole person with intellect, emotions, and will, for which the preacher must be convinced of the authority of the Word of God for the intellect; he must learn the concrete images and symbolic descriptions of Scripture in order to address the emotions and conscience; and he must master the language of Scripture in order to persuade the will, but especially pray to God the Holy Spirit. Third, with regard to the form of eloquence, Bavinck points out that good delivery is inextricably linked to the character of the speaker, and suggests that we fellowship with biblical characters, people from the rich cultures of history, ancient and modern, and godly saints in order to develop and blossom the spirit necessary for true oratory. Furthermore, Bavinck points out, based on the incarnation of Christ, that eloquence is not only the harmonization of the verbal and non-verbal elements of communication, but also the perfect harmony of thought and word, word and gesture, inner and outer. There are seven implications of Bavinck’s Eloquence for preachers in the Korean church. (1) The preacher must be a born-again person. (2) The preacher must be a passionate man who is convinced of the authority of Scripture and desires the salvation of his hearers. (3) The preacher should not imitate others, but should utilize his or her gifts and preach in his or her own voice. (4) The preacher must be in communion and dialog with the audience. (5) The preacher must pray to the Holy Spirit. (6) A preacher should learn and train in the art of eloquence. (7) The gospel preacher should be concerned with and trained in the formal elements of oratory, both verbal and nonverbal.

이 소논문은 설교 전달과 관련하여 헤르만 바빙크의『웅변술』을 엄 밀하게 분석하여 21세기 한국교회 설교자들에게 유익을 주고자 한다. 바빙크는 그의『웅변술』을 통해 구체적으로 말의 은사를 계발할 것을 촉구했다. 하지만 그는 보다 근본적으로 개혁주의적 관점에서 웅변의 원리, 웅변의 본질, 그리고 웅변의 형식을 다룸으로써 효과적인 설교 전달만 아니라, 웅변가로서의 설교자의 인격도 함께 다루었다. 첫째, 웅변의 원리와 관련하여, 바빙크는 사람이 말을 잘 하려면 먼저 사람의 존재 자체가 온전해야 한다고 지적함으로써 웅변과 인격의 상호 관계 를 간파했다. 바빙크는 웅변의 생명이자 비밀, 그 근원은 지성과 의지 배후에 있는 정서라고 지적한다. 둘째, 웅변의 본질과 관련하여, 바빙 크는 웅변이란 지정의(知情意)의 전인을 겨냥해야 하며, 이를 위해 설 교자는 지성을 위해 하나님의 말씀의 권위를 확신해야 하며, 정서와 양 심을 두드리기 위해 성경의 구체적인 이미지와 상징적 묘사를 배워야 하며, 의지를 설득하기 위해서는 성경의 언어에 통달하되, 특히 성령 하나님을 향해 기도해야 한다고 지적한다. 셋째, 웅변의 형식과 관련하 여, 바빙크는 좋은 전달이란 연설가의 인격과 불가분의 관계에 있음을 지적하면서 참된 웅변에 필요한 우리 정신의 발전과 개화를 위해 성경 의 인물들과 역사 속 풍성한 문화를 형성했던 고대와 현대의 사람들, 그리고 경건한 성도들과 교제할 것을 제안한다. 게다가 바빙크는 그리 스도의 성육신에 기초하여 전달의 언어적, 비언어적 요소들의 조화만 아니라, 생각과 말, 말과 몸짓, 내면과 외면의 완벽한 조화가 전달을 완 성한다고 지적한다. 바빙크의『웅변술』이 한국교회 설교자들에게 주는 시사점은 일곱 가 지이다. (1) 설교자는 거듭난 사람이어야 한다. (2) 설교자는 성경의 권 위를 확신하고 청중의 구원을 겨냥하는 열정의 사람이어야 한다. (3) 설교자는 남을 흉내내지 말고 자신에게 주어진 은사를 활용하여 자기 만의 목소리로 설교해야 한다. (4) 설교자는 반드시 청중과 교통하고 대화해야 한다. (5) 설교자는 반드시 성령 하나님께 기도해야 한다. (6) 설교자는 웅변의 기술을 배우고 훈련해야 한다. (7) 복음 설교자는 웅 변의 형식적 요소들, 즉 언어적, 비언어적 요소들에 깊은 관심을 갖고 훈련해야 한다.
