It was around the end of the 6th century that the technology of making roof tiles in the Japanese archipelago was introduced through Baekje, and it was relatively late in Northeast Asia. The Japanese showed off the majesty of the roof by producing a variety of roof tiles from the Asuka to the modern. There are differences in the making of roof tiles in each region and period in the Japanese archipelago. However, there are many areas to pay attention to because roof tiles are advantageous for confirming the development of civil engineering technology, urban landscape, and sphere of influence, cultural exchange and dissemination in Northeast Asia. In this study, the types and terms of Japanese tiles are first identified. After that, the purpose of this study is to understand the changing patterns front roof tiles, Gyimyon tile and chimi that are linked to Japanese history in each period. Based on this, through the function and role of tiles in the Japanese archipelago and the relationship with the Korean Peninsula roof tiles, the position of Japanese society with the technology to make tiles that change themselves was identified in the history of Northeast Asia. Japanese roof tiles have their own characteristics, but they also went through a process of change due to many external influences. This aspect can be confirmed through the characteristics of the pattern of the roof tile, the characteristics of the manufacturing technology, and the characteristics of the shape for each period. However, what the Japanese wanted to pursue through roof tiles was to decorate the roof of the most powerful in each era and use it as a means to reveal the majesty. These Japanese roof tiles are closely related to the roof tiles on the Korean Peninsula from ancient times to modern times. The Japanese introduced tile-making skills, while changing and developing their own techniques, and came to produce their own new roof tiles. Although there are differences in the form and content of exchanges depending on the times, it can be seen that the roof tiles of the Japanese archipelago were directly or indirectly influenced by Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon. Through this study, I hope that a deeper understanding of the roof tiles that made the roofs of Korea and Japan majestic and an approach to new historical awareness will be possible.

일본열도에서의 조와술(造瓦術)은 동북아시아에서는 비교적 늦은 시기인 6C 말경에 백제에서 도입된 이후로, 고대(飛鳥時代-平安時代), 중세(鎌倉時代-室町時代), 근세(戦国時代-江戸時代), 근‧현대(明治時代-현재)에 이르기까지 지역별‧시대별로 다양한 기와류를 제작해 지붕의 장엄함을 과시했다. 일본열도 내에서의 기와 제작은 각 지역과 시기에서 차이를 보이지만, 기와를 통한 토목기술의 발전뿐만이 아니라 도시경관 및 세력권의 파악, 동북아시아의 문화 교류 및 전파 등을 확인하기에 유리하기 때문에 주목할 부분들이 많다. 본 연구는 일본기와의 종류 및 용어를 사용함에 있어서의 주의할 점들을 먼저 살펴본 후, 각각의 시대별로 일본의 역사와 결부된 막새기와, 귀면와, 치미 등의 변화 양상을 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한 것이다. 이를 바탕으로 일본열도에서 요구되던 기와의 기능과 역할 및 한반도 기와와의 관련성을 통해, 자체 변화하는 조와술을 가진 일본 사회가 동북아시아의 역사 속에서 어떤 자리매김을 하고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 일본의 기와는 그들만의 독자성을 가지는 한편으로, 많은 외래의 영향에 의한 변화 과정을 겪게 된다. 이와 같은 양상은 기와의 문양적 속성이나 제작 기법상의 특징, 형태적인 특성 등을 통해서 확인이 가능하다. 특히 근세 이전까지 기와를 통해 일본 사회가 추구하고자 했던 것은 정치 지배의 거점 지역이나 종교시설의 지붕을 장식해 그 장엄함을 드러내려 함이었다. 이러한 일본의 기와는 고대에서부터 근세에 이르기까지 한반도의 기와와 깊은 관련성이 있다. 외래의 조와술을 도입하는 한편으로 자신들의 기술을 변화‧발전시켜 나갔고, 자신들만의 새로운 기와를 생산하기에 이르기까지 시대에 따라 교류의 형태와 내용에서 차이가 있겠지만, 일본열도의 기와는 고대에서부터 근세에 이르기까지 직‧간접적으로 한반도의 영향을 받고 있었던 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 한‧일의 지붕을 장엄하게 한 기와에 대한 보다 충실한 이해와 새로운 역사 인식으로의 접근이 가능할 수 있기를 기대해 본다.
