This study focuses on the political status of 'North residents' in unification education. Through this, it is necessary to explain the concept of ‘North residents' and to propose to design a class that includes totalitarianism as a content element that can enhance understanding of their lives. In particular, this study pays attention to the characteristics of totalitarianism that Arendt’s analyzes. The expected effects are as follows. First, it can help students understand the North Korean political system and North residents' life under it. Second, through criticism of totalitarianism, the connection with the state and civic units can be increased. Third, it is possible to analyze the problems of the North residents' human rights situation at the social justice level. Fourth, by learning from the repression carried out not only in North Korea but also in totalitarian countries, we can have a mindset to aspire to an ethics of peace and coexistence as a global citizen.

본 연구에서는 통일 교육에서 ‘북한 주민’의 정치적 지위에 주목함으 로써, 북한 사람들을 ‘북한 주민’이라고 일컫는 까닭과 그들의 삶에 대 한 이해를 높일 수 있는 사회사상 즉, 전체주의를 내용 요소로 포함하 는 수업을 설계할 것을 제안하고자 한다. 특히, 아렌트가 분석하는 전 체주의의 특징에 주목할 것이다. 이를 통해 첫째, 북한 체제와 그 체제 하의 삶에 대한 학생들의 이해를 도울 수 있다. 둘째, 전체주의에 대한 비판을 통해 국가 및 시민 단원과의 연계성을 높일 수 있다. 셋째, 사 회 정의적 차원에서 북한 인권 상황이 지니고 있는 문제를 분석할 수 있다. 넷째, 전체주의 국가들의 탄압으로부터 교훈을 얻어 세계 시민으 로서 평화와 공존의 윤리를 열망하는 마음가짐을 지닐 수 있다.
