The purpose of this study is to elucidate the necessity of death education in elementary schools and to explore approaches to overcome the challenges associated with its introduction. Death education, which helps individuals live more meaningful lives through reflection on death, is essential for children to cope with the shock of death and to form a healthy and correct understanding of it. However, the introduction of death education faces difficulties such as society's aversion to the topic and a lack of and a lack of educational preparedness. To address these challenges, this study suggests renaming death education in elementary schools as "Life Understanding Education," designating moral education as the primary subject for death education, and expanding social support and empathy. Additionally, it proposes the future development of an elementary school death education curriculum and teacher training programs.

본 연구의 목적은 초등학교 죽음교육의 필요성을 밝히고, 죽음교육 을 도입하기 위한 어려움을 극복하기 위한 접근 방안을 모색하는 것이 다. 죽음에 대한 성찰을 통해 삶을 더욱 의미 있게 살도록 돕는 죽음 교육은 아동이 죽음의 충격에 대비할 수 있도록 하고, 건강하고 올바 른 죽음관 형성을 위해 필요하다. 그러나 죽음교육 도입은 죽음에 대 한 사회적 차원의 거부감과 교육적 차원의 준비 부족 등의 어려움이 있다. 이를 극복하는 접근 방안으로 초등학교 죽음교육의 명칭을 생애 이해 교육으로 바꾸고, 도덕과를 죽음교육의 주관교과로 선정하며, 사 회적 지지와 공감의 확장을 제시하였다. 추후 초등학교 죽음 교육과정 과 교사교육 프로그램 개발이 필요하다.
