The purpose of this study was to specifically understand how the meaning of Chinese graduate students’ experiences of grit growth in Korea is revealed based on the context of their actual daily environment. For data collection, we recruited six Chinese graduate students meeting our selection criteria, and in-depth interviews were conducted with each of them over three sessions. The data was analyzed by the requirements for qualitative case studies, and the results were presented in two ways: within-case analysis and between-case analysis. In particular, the results of the between-case analysis were categorized into a total of 12 sub-categories and 5 super-categories. These super-categories were: ‘Independence fostered through navigating crises in an unfamiliar environment in Korea,’ ‘Skills developed exploring students’ desired major despite the difficulty of studying in Korean,’ ‘Life lessons learned during my struggling study abroad,’ ‘Grateful people who supported and encouraged me to live in Korea,’ and ‘Life goals that strengthened my shaky heart as an international student.’ A central theme encompassing these super- and sub-categories was identified: ‘Every day I strive with a clearer dream than before while learning about life through studying abroad.’ Lastly, based on the comparative analysis of the participants’ cases and the exploration of the meaning of their common experiences, this study suggests ways to improve the adaptability of Chinese graduate students to life in Korea, enhance their academic performance, and improve their quality of life.

이 연구는 국내 대학원에 다니는 중국인 유학생의 한국 생활에서의 그릿 성장 경험 의 의미가 당사자들의 실제 일상 환경 맥락에 바탕하여 어떻게 밝혀지는지 구체적으로 이해할 목적에서 수행되었다. 자료수집을 위해 선정기준에 부합하는 중국인 유학생 6 명을 확보하였으며, 이들과 개인당 3회기에 걸쳐 심층면담을 실시했다. 자료는 질적 사 례연구에서 요구하는 방식에 부합하도록 분석하였으며, 사례 내 분석과 사례 간 분석 으로 이원화해 그 결과를 제시했다. 특히 사례 간 분석에 따른 결과는 총 12개의 하위 범주, 5개의 상위범주를 통해 드러났다. 그중에서 상위범주는 ‘낯선 한국살이에 가득한 위기 헤쳐가며 다진 자립심’, ‘한국어로 공부하기 힘들지만 원하는 전공탐구로 쌓여간 실력’, ‘내내 허둥거리는 유학 기간에 마침내 터득한 인생교훈’, ‘서로 의지하고 토닥이 면서 한국 생활 독려한 내 고마운 사람들’, ‘유학생이라 흔들리는 심정 강건히 다잡아준 삶의 목표’와 같았다. 그리고 이러한 상하위범주를 아우르는 중심주제로 ‘유학으로 인 생 알아가며 전보다 또렷해진 꿈 안고 정진하는 매일’을 발견하였다. 마지막으로, 연구 참여자들의 사례를 비교 분석하고 공통점을 아우르는 경험의 의미를 찾아본 바에 근거 를 두어, 국내 대학원 재학 중국인 유학생의 한국 생활 적응력 및 학업 수행 수월성 향 상, 삶의 질 증진 등의 방안을 모색하였다.
