This article reveals Seon thought of Geumdang Lee Jae-bok (1918~1991), known as a representative educator and poet in the Daejeon-Chungnam area. Under the influence of Seokjeon Park Han-young in Japanese colonial era, Lee Jae-bok made great efforts in the fields of Buddhist studies, Buddhist scripture translation, and literature with the heart of patriotic love to find the way to modernize Buddhism. Lee Jae-bok, who played a major role in the founding of the Taego order of Korean Buddhism after liberation, left a great mark on educators, poets, and the popularization of Buddhism in the Daejeon-Chungnam area. In the reality that Lee Jae-bok’s status as a modern high monk is not firm, research on Lee Jae-bok’s Seon thought is an unexplored field. In order to reveal Lee Jae-bok’s Seon thought, the writer analyzed his life, The Great Master Yongbong, Lee Jae-bok’s collection, and the poetry of Geumdang, and then identified the contents and characteristics of Seon thought revealed in Lee Jae-bok’s life and thoughts through this work. It can be said that Lee Jae-bok, who lived in a period of division and chaos after Japanese colonial era and liberation, was a Bodhisattva who transcend the sangha and the vulgar and a Seon master who was not bound by the appearance of a Seon master while encompassing Seon school and doctrinal school. Therefore, attempts to identify Lee Jae-bok’s Seon thought can be said to be the process of restoring the lives of the ancient monks who are otherized in the fetter of modern Korean Buddhism and disappearing from our memories.

본 고는 대전-충남지역의 대표적인 교육자이자 시인으로 알려진 금당 이재복(1918~1991)의 선사상을 밝힌 글이다. 이재복은 일제강점기 석전 박한영의 영향 아래 불교 근대화의 길을 찾기 위해 애국 애족의 마음을 가지고 교학과 역경 및 문예 분야에 큰 노력을 기울였다. 해방 이후 한국 불교태고종의 창종에 큰 역할을 하였던 이재복은 대전-충남지역을 중심으 로 교육자와 시인 그리고 불교 대중화에 크나큰 족적을 남겼다. 근현대 고승으로서 이재복의 위상이 확고하지 않은 현실에서 이재복의 선사상에 대한 연구는 미개척 분야이다. 이재복의 선사상을 밝히기 위하여 그의 생애 및 용봉 대종사 이재복 선생 전집 그리고 금당의 시집을 분 석하였으며, 이러한 작업을 통하여 이재복의 삶과 사상 속에 드러난 선사 상의 내용과 특징을 규명하였다. 일제강점기와 해방 후 분단과 혼란의 시기를 살다 간 이재복의 삶은 승 속(僧俗)을 초탈한 보살승이자, 선교(禪敎)를 아우르면서도 선사(禪師)의 모습에 얽매이지 않은 선사였다고 말할 수 있다. 따라서 이재복의 선사상 을 규명하고자 하는 시도는 근현대 한국불교의 질곡 속에서 타자화되고 우리들의 기억 속에서 사라져가는 고승들의 삶을 복원해가는 과정이라 할 수 있다.
