In this study, we examined the Korean spelling of loanwords derived from German by analyzing corpora from Korean newspapers, publications, and internet sources. We utilized the National Institute of Korean Language’s “Modu Malmoongchi,” “Yonsei Malmoongchi,” “Sejong Kkokkoma Malmoongchi,” and “Sketch Engine” to compare and analyze corpora from the 20th century and those revised after 2017. The results revealed frequent errors in the spelling of foreign words related to toponyms (place names) and personal names. These errors included artificially representing sounds absent in Korean, adhering strictly to Korean norms for consonant endings and word forms contrary to the actual source pronunciation, and introducing non-standard consonant expressions to approximate the original sound. We further investigated errors in 21st-century corpora using search engines other than the Yonsei Malmoongchi. While the overall error rate decreased significantly compared to previous decades, incorrect spellings persisted in toponyms and personal names, where adherence to the original pronunciation or mixing similar vowel sounds remained problematic. However, in the most recent data from newspaper corpora spanning from 2021 to 2023, the errors previously identified were not observed. Notably, errors in major media outlets decreased, likely due to multiple revisions in spelling conventions after the initial changes. When writing in Korean, having standardized rules is crucial. Different spellings by various individuals can lead to confusion. Therefore, we should pay attention to and adhere to the current spelling conventions, while also being vigilant in pointing out any spelling errors. It’s important to recognize that no single set of rules can satisfy everyone, so we should be open to criticizing invalid spellings and suggesting better alternatives. The purpose of this study lies in comparing the spelling of German loanwords before and after revisions using actual newspaper and document corpora. By referencing examples of spelling errors, we aim to provide assistance for accurately representing German loanwords in their original form. Furthermore, this study seeks to highlight the limitations of existing conventions and foster discussions on improving the representation of original German loanwords in Korean.

본 연구에서는 한국 신문, 출판물, 인터넷 수집을 통한 말뭉치 분석을 통하여 독일어 로부터 파생된 외래어의 한국어 표기가 어떠한 양상으로 나타나는지 살펴보고자 하였 다. 여기에서 국립국어원의 ‘모두의 말뭉치’, ‘연세 말뭉치’, ‘세종 꼬꼬마 말뭉치’, ‘스케 치 엔진’을 이용하여 말뭉치 데이터가 구축되어 있는 1960년대 이후부터 최근까지의 말 뭉치를 비교하고 분석하였다. 그 결과 지명과 인명의 외래어 사용에서의 표기 오류가 빈 번하였다. 파찰음 등과 같은 한국어에 없는 발음을 인위적으로 표기하는 것, 실제 원지음 과 달리 한국어 규범의 제한된 받침과 단어로만 표기해야 하는 것, 원지음과 가깝게 발음 하기 위해 한국어에서 사용하지 않는 받침 표현을 인위적으로 표기한 것 등에서 오류가 발생하였다. 20세기 연세 말뭉치 외의 다른 말뭉치 검색 엔진을 통해서는 2000년부터 최근까지의 오류를 살펴보았다. 개정 이후로 오류의 수가 그 전 시대에 비해 현저히 줄어들었지만, 이전의 오류가 많았던 지명과 인명 부분에서 원지음대로 표기하거나 비슷한 소리의 모 음 혼용 표기 등에서 여전히 잘못된 표기가 존재한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 하지만 가장 최근 자료인 2021년부터 2023년까지의 신문 말뭉치에서는 앞서 검토한 오류가 보이지 않았다. 특히 주류 언론사의 오류가 줄었는데 이는 수차례에 걸친 표기법 개정 이후 개선 된 것으로 여겨진다. 한국어로 글을 작성할 때는 통일된 규정이 필요하다. 사람마다 달리 표기하면 같은 뜻 인지 알 수 없다. 따라서 우리는 현행 표기법에 관심을 가지고 준수하며 표기 오류를 지적 할 수 있어야 한다. 표기 규정이 모든 이를 만족시킬 수는 없다. 따라서 타당하지 않은 표 기법은 비판할 수 있어야 하며 좀 더 나은 표현이 있으면 그 방안을 제시할 수 있는 자세 를 가져야 할 것이다. 본고는 실제 신문과 문서 등의 말뭉치를 활용하여 외래어표기법 개 정 전후의 독일어 원어 외래어 표기를 비교한 것에 의의가 있다. 아울러 표기 오류의 예를 참고하여 독일어 원어인 외래어 표기 시 도움이 되기를 바라며 현행 외래어 표기법의 한 계를 재고하는 기회를 마련하고자 하였다.
