This study aimed to explore the counseling experiences of elementary school counselors regarding the increasing risk of school dropping out among elementary students, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. To achieve this, in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 professional counselors working in the “Wee” classes of elementary schools in U region, and the data were analyzed using Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) methodology. As a result, the study identified themes such as the reasons, contents, methods, challenges, and success factors in counseling students at risk of dropping out, and the expectation of school counselors regarding counseling related to school dropout risk. This study holds significance in providing: the necessity for a social recognition that dropout risk starting from elementary school, guidance on counseling intervention strategies for elementary students at risk of dropping out, and practical, field-oriented data necessary for the development of school and societal support systems.

본 연구는 코로나19 이후 점차 증가하는 초등학생의 학교중단 위기와 이에 대한 초등학교 상담자의 상담 경험을 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 U 지역의 초등학교 위(Wee) 클래스에 근무하는 전문상담(교)사 10명을 대상으로 심층 면접을 실시하였고, 합의적 질적연구 방법 (Consensual Qualitative Research: CQR)에 따라 자료를 분석하였다. 연구 결과 “학교중단 위기학 생 상담 이유, 상담 내용, 상담 방법, 상담의 어려운 점, 상담의 성공 요인, 학교중단 위기 상 담과 관련하여 학교 상담자의 바라는 점” 등의 주제가 도출되었다. 본 연구는 초등학교부터 학교중단 위기가 발생하고 있다는 사회적 인식 전환의 필요성, 초등학생의 학교중단 위기에 대한 상담 개입의 방향성, 학교 및 사회적인 지원제도 방안 마련에 필요한 실질적, 현장 중 심적인 자료를 제공했다는 것에 의의가 있다.
